Cambuslang were made to work all the way in this cup tie as they
had to rely on a spot kick win to see them through against a team a division
below them. Keeper Stevie McGovern came to his sides rescue saving 2 of the 3
spot kicks he faced.
Cambuslang also had their discipline called into question as not
for the first time this season they failed to finish the game with the full
quota of players, Carmichael and Galloway were the sinners after both received
their marching orders after two yellow cards a piece.
As the game got under way it was the visitors with the first
effort on target and Buchanan made McGovern work with his shot that the Lang
keeper did well to save. The home side responded immediately when Stoddart had
his effort blocked. Both sides were forced into early changes after McGregor
and Gow's Quinn collided and both failed to run off the knocks they were
replaced by Webster for the Lang and Cornwell for the Gow.
With 25 minutes on the clock things weren't looking too good for
the home side as the Gow opened the scoring. A deep cross to the back post was
headed back across goal and Glasgow stooped to head the ball home from 6 yards.
Cambuslang went close through Galloway but his shot was well saved by the Gow
goalie. Only a minute later and the home side saw another chance go a begging
when Stoddart drove narrowly wide with the keeper rooted to the spot.
Lesmahagow had strong appeals for a penalty waived away in the dieing minutes
of the first half when the ball seemed to come off the Lang defenders are.
H-T 0-1
both sides created chances in the second half and indeed the
visitors should have increased their lead on 55 minutes, Glasgow again forcing
McGovern into a fine stop. Cambuslang replaced Doak and Daisley with Carmichael
and Dignam. Carmichael made an immediate impact and was lucky to stay on the
park when he had a wild kick at the Gow midfielder right in front of the
referee, who only booked the Lang man. Cambuslang chances were few and far
between and most were coming from long range efforts outside the box. Webster
was next to have a pop and his effort went just wide of the post. Cambuslang
managed an equaliser on 72 minutes. Carmichael crossed to Dignam but he scuffed
his shot into the path of Stoddart and his looping shot bounced over the keeper
and into the net. Lang's Galloway picked up his first booking with 10 minutes
remaining then he got his second with 2 minutes left on the clock which
resulted in his early bath, he was quickly followed by Carmichael and the Lang
were down to 9 men. Thankfully for the home side this game went straight to
penalties with no extra time.
Cambuslang went first in the shoot out and gained the upper hand
when Balmain settled some nerves and slotted calmly past the Gow keeper.
Johnstone levelled with his kick. Cambuslang scored with their second when
Feeney slotted home. Buchannan was the first to miss from the spot when
McGovern saved his effort superbly diving to his right. Skipper Billy Holmes
made no mistake to put the Lang in the driving seat. The Gow then missed their
next kick and Lang scored there's through Ferguson who put the Lang through to
the next round.
