Cambuslang Rangers 2-1 Vale of Leven

Stagecoach Central 2nd Division

Saturday 1st September 2007

at Somervell Park

We had to shuffle the pack a bit yesterday with Bishop (holiday) Barton (tonsillitis) Ogilvy (foot injury) Docherty (holiday) Murphy (hamstring), Taylor (hernia) all unavailable for selection.

We brought in trialist Derek Kennedy CF ex
Clydebank and Neilston to bolster our front line. Incidentally he had a very good debut, holding the ball up all day.

Vale were in a very similar situation to us with numerous new faces in with the experienced players they retained from last year. Over the piece they preformed very well and look like having a decent season.

Trialist Impressed On Debut

We went with a 3-4-1-2 with Smiddy playing in the hole behind brown and Kennedy. We had several decent chances early on and had most of the first half playing into a strong wind. Vale tested us with several very good corners swung in with the wind but we held out well and 0-0 was just about right at half time.

And Again

Second half was similar to the first with Lang having most of the game and it seemed like a matter of time until we scored and Broonie scored a peach from about 18yards after the ball broke to him after a corner.

We kept pressing and eventually Barry Devine earned a penalty when he was brought down after charging into the box. Hughes converted the spot kick to put us 2 up. (Normal service resumed mate)

Vale of course changed things to try and get back into the game and eventually scored 5 mins after we went 2-0 up. They fired a hopeful ball into the box from about 1/2 way line and Barry Fraser mis-judged the flight which Vales 6ft 5 centre half got on the end of and looped a header over the oncoming Fraser into the net. To be far they probably deserved a goal as they were pressing us back over the last 20 mins or so.

Smiddy could have ended the game on about 80 mins when he ran 1/2 of the park shrugging off a couple of defenders but his side foot effort was well blocked by the keeper.

Brown Congratulated By Team Mates

As Was Spot Kick Scorer Hughes

Over the piece we deservedly won but it could have and should have been a less stressful last 15 if we took our chances.

3 points is 3 points and it was a decent start to the season. Delighted with the attitude of the entire squad, even those who were left out, that’s the strength of any team, and players should be disappointed at being on the bench or left out, but it the measure of the man seeing how they deal with it.
