St Anthony's 2-3 Cambuslang Rangers
Abercorn 1st Division
Saturday 1st November
at McKenna Park
Cambuslang
Rangers travelled to McKenna park at the weekend to take on St Anthony's in a
vital league encounter. The visitors had been rattling in the goals recently
and went there full of confidence.
The visitors
recorded a 3-2 victory after goals from McCarroll and Brown (2) ensured the
Land went home the happier of the two sides. This was the home sides first
competitive defeat the their new ground which had lasted 19 matches.
Young Lang
striker, Richie Love gained a starting slot after his second half hat trick vs.
Vale of Clyde, at the expense of Alan McCrae who dropped to the bench. The
visitors were also still without Brain Martin (Leg) and Coulter (Shin).
Cambuslang made
the best possible start to the match when the opened the scoring after only 7
minutes. The ball broke to McCarroll just outside the box and he unleashed a
superb drive into the top corner which left the Ant's keeper rooted to the
spot. The home side fought back and Rowan in the Lang goal had to be down
smartly at his near post to prevent Mullheron from equalising minutes later.
The visitors should have doubled their lead a few minutes later when top scorer
Brown found the ball at his feet but somehow from 3 yards out he managed to
scoop it up and over the bar. Cambuslang at this stage were the ones doing all
the pressing and went close again, this time Galloway cut inside before firing
in a shot that went narrowly wide of the far post, again with the keeper rooted
to the spot. Brown missed another golden opportunity after being played in by
Love but the Lang striker failed to trouble the keeper. Some sustained pressure
from the home side saw Cambuslang hemmed in to their box at the end of the half
and on a few occasions they should have got level but some poor finishing cost
them dearly.
H-T 1-0
The second half
started with a couple of bookings for the home side. McCarroll on the end
of a couple of poor challenges. The home side grabbed an equaliser on the hour
mark, and what a strike it was. Dickson picked the ball up before firing home
off the underside of the bar from all of 20 yards giving the Lang keeper no
chance as he conceded his first goal in the league this season. The home side
were lever for all of 2 minutes as the visitors restored heir lead in fortunate
circumstances. Brown run from mid field and fired at goal the Ant's keeper
seemed to have it covered but he let it spoil and it spun into the net, much to
the surprise of everyone in the ground. Two minutes later and it was 3-1. A
lovely through ball by Love saw Brown tear down on goal and he calmly slotted
past the Ant's keeper. Cambuslang replaced the ever hard working Holmes with
Carmichael. The visitors were thrown a life line with 15 minutes to go.
Defender Feenie was adjudged to have fouled in the box and the referee awarded
a penalty. This was duly despatched into the net by Barclay to set up a nervous
final quarter. The visitors ran down the clock and replaced McCarroll and Love
with Watson and McCrae and held on for a vital 3 points that took them clear of
the pile.
