Blantyre Victoria 3-4 Cambuslang Rangers

Carlsberg Sectional League Cup

Wednesday 3rd August 2005

Cambuslang kicked off their Sectional League Section with a trip to Blantyre on Wednesday night. This 7 goal encounter should give the management food for thought as they try and find some answers to the defensive frailties clearly on show.

Cambuslang almost threw this one away as they went in at the break 3-1 to the good only for the Vics to draw level in the second half but a late winner from Sub Davie Wade ensured Cambuslang started the section with a win.

Both team were going for it from the off as the game raged from end to end in the opening stages. Cambuslang took the lead on 22 minutes when Paul Burns curled home a fine free kick past the helpless Vics goalie. 2 minutes later and the visitors doubled their advantage. Porter fed Gilroy who rounded the keeper and slotted home.

Blantyre pulled a goal back on 38 minutes after a poor clearance by the Lang defence saw the ball fall nicely and Vics striker fired home from 25 yards. Cambuslang restored the 2 goal advantage just before the break when Gilroy got on the end of Menelews cross and headed home from close range

H-T 1-3

Cambuslang Rangers captain Andrew Noble conceded a penalty at the start of the half but this was well saved by the trialist keeper. On the hour mark and Vics got themselves back into the game. Their big forward headed home. With 20 minutes remaining Blantyre drew level as Cambuslang seemed to lose the place a little. The organisation of the first half seemed to desert them. A spectacular effort saw the ball fly into the far corner of the net with the keeper nowhere. Cambuslang made a treble substitution as Faulds, Wade and Love all entered the frae and Gilroy, Porter and Stoddart were replaced. Cambuslang dug deep and eventually got the winner with 8 minutes left. Faulds skipped past the Vics full back and sent over a cross that Wade slid past the keeper.
