Muad JFC 3-2 Cambuslang Rangers

Citylink Scottish Cup 2nd Round

Saturday 3rd November 2007

at Pleasure Park

It was a long journey for Cambuslang as they travelled to Aberdeenshire to take on Superleague side Maud in the 2nd round of the Scottish Cup, if it was long getting there you can imagine it was even longer on the way home after the narrow 3-2 defeat.

There is a fine line between success and failure and unfortunately Cambuslang landed on the wrong side of that line. Its hard to put a finger on what went wrong on Saturday and it was a game that Cambuslang could have won. The omission of Robbie Cameron was a major factor in the defeat as Ogilvey and he had just started to hit it off. Jim Kavanagh didn't make the trip. Kennedy moved up front to partner Ogilvey but it just didn't work for the two guys. Cambuslang will be asking themselves, if only we had taken some more of the chances and if only the ref had awarded a stone wall penalty near the end. At the end of the day it just wasn't to be and Maud moved into the 3rd round draw.

It would be harsh to start criticising the squad as I don't think they could have given anymore that they did in the final 25 minutes.

Cambuslang started the brighter of the 2 sides and it was clear early on that the home side were quite content to punt the ball forward at every opportunity and allow the two nippy front men to run onto any scraps that went a begging, and in the end it worked a treat for them. Cambuslang had the first effort at goal but it was cleared off the line after only 3 minutes. It was a fairly even opening with neither team posing much of a threat and the game was bogged down in the middle of the park. Maud had a chance on 15 minutes but Smith saved the shot of Ligertwood.

5 minutes later and the home side took the lead, against the run of play it has to be said. It was a break up the park and Cambuslang were caught out. Both wide men split the Lang defence and this allowed Ligertwood to get the shot away, it looked as though Smith had pushed it over the crossbar but agonisingly it dropped into the back of the net. On 33 minutes Maud picked up the first booking of the afternoon.

A crude challenge by Stephen on Ferguson resulted in the yellow card being shown.

Cambuslang had a half chance when Ogilvey fired in an overhead kick but the effort went just wide of the post. The first of many strange decisions by the ref came on 35 minutes. Ogilvey chased down the keeper and blocked his clearance but the ref booked the Lang striker, for what is anyone's guess.

Cambuslang split the Maud defence when Devine ran onto Ferguson's accurate pass but he couldn't keep the effort down and it flew inches over. Lang were dealt a blow on 44 minutes. Coyle failed to recover from an earlier knock and was replaced by Docherty. The Lang man looked very lively when he came on.

H-T 1-0

10 minutes into the 2nd half and Maud looked to have put the tie to rest when they grabbed a controversial 2nd goal. The pass out wide was collected by Powell, who looked at least 3 yard offside but play was allowed to go on and Murray was on hand to knock into the net. There followed a flurry of bookings Lang's Devine, Ferguson and Hughes were all cautioned as the ref seemed to lose the place a little. Cambuslang replaced Kennedy with Smith on 65 minutes.

The game threatened to boil over after a shocking tackle by Murray on Taylor who was bending down to collect a ball that had rolled out of play, Murray came sliding into Taylor and was lucky to escape with just a yellow card. Cambuslang bench reacted to the ref's leniency and were warned about their conduct.

Lynch (out of shot) Fired Home From The Spot

Cambuslang dragged themselves back in the game when their 2nd half pressure finally reaped some rewards. A blatant hand ball in the box resulted in a penalty kick being awarded. Despite a brave attempt by the Maud keeper, Hughes shot had the power to end up in the net. A minute later and Lang should have been awarded a 2nd spot kick.

Docherty slipped past a tackle from Powell pole axed Smith in the box but for some reason the ref booked the Lang man for a dive. As poor a decision as your likely to see all season. Maud were quite happy to sit back and hit Lang on the break. As Cambuslang pushed and pushed it looked as though they were about to level the scoring but Docherty's looping header came back off the bar and was cleared. On 90 minutes Maud scored a killer 3rd goal. A cross into the box wasn't dealt with by the Lang defence and Stephen was on hand to head home from close range.

Credit to Cambuslang though they kept plugging away and grabbed a 2nd through Ferguson.

But it was all too late and Maud ran down the 4 minutes stoppage time with time-wasting tactics that too went unpunished by the Elgin official. Maud held out and move into the 3rd round draw.
