Wishaw Juniors 2-2 Cambuslang Rangers

Stagecoach Central 2nd Division

Saturday 6th September 2007

Cambuslang Rangers travelled to Wishaw in this league match and yet again failed to get a much needed moral boosting 3 points. In a game that could have went either way they came away with a share of the spoils despite going to behind in the first half, but the fighting spirit which had been missing in previous games appeared but only briefly.

Manager Alan Wardlaw swung the axe in the midst of last weekend 4-1 defeat. He gave 4 players their competitive debut. Ian Bonner, Derek Hewitt, Jamie Bruce and Andy Wallace the players to come in at the expense of Lynch, Brown, Doherty and Bishop all missed out. So too did Paul Hughes who was suspended.

It was a bit of a topsy turvy game with Cambuslang making the better start, as they have done in most games, but they were unable to keep the concentration throughout the game.

They should have made the dream start after only 4 minutes when Ogilvey was played into space but the Lang striker pulled his effort wide of the far post with only the keeper to beat. Kennedy was next to spurn a golden opportunity when his 4 yard header was tipped onto the bar. Wishaw went close through Coffey but his snap shot on the turn went inches over the bar. The home side were forced into a change on 24 minutes when McCann failed to recover from an accidental clash, his slot taken by Noble.

Another Fine Performance From Smith In Goals

Just before the break and disaster for Lang defence. They gave Coffey too much time and he made no mistake slotting home from close range. As the game was heading to the break, things got worse for the visitors as they went 2 behind and again the defence seemed to switch off. A ball across the face of gaol was not cut out and Coffey was on hand to slot home although there was a suspicion of offside at this one. Deep into stoppage time in the first half and Cambuslang dragged themselves back into the game. Ferguson driving home from the edge of the box to out the half time score at 2-1.

H-T 2-1

The second half was more of Cambuslang creating, but failing to convert, numerous good chances. Wishaw themselves were playing some impressive stuff of their own and indeed had the ball in the net a couple of times only to be ruled out by the referee for infringements. Lang's Kavanagh picked up a booking on 55 minutes for what appeared a nothing challenge but the ref saw otherwise.

On 65 minutes Cambuslang Rangers drew level, and deservedly so. A fine run and shot by Stevie Barton from all of 30 yards found the bottom corner to pull Lang Level.

Bruce Hardly Lost A Header All Day

Wishaw On The Attack

Cambuslang's Hewitt found himself on the end of a very heavy challenge that should have seen Wishaw reduced to 10 men but again the ref thought otherwise and only booked the Wishaw culprit.

A storming end to the game saw both sides go all out for the 3 points and it was the home side that came closest to securing the win. But for some excellent goal keeping from Smith and the woodwork, Cambuslang could have left with nothing. Wishaw had a goal ruled out for offside, thankfully the correct decision from the man in the middle. Smith then made a wonder stop from a Coffey effort and the keeper’s reflex reactions put the ball over the bar. Cambuslang then had to clear an effort from under their own bar which Wishaw players were convinced was well over. Stoppage time seen both sides settle for a share of the spoils.
