Glencairn 2-1 Cambuslang Rangers

Sectional League Cup

Wednesday 8th August 2007

at Somervell Park

Cambuslang Rangers and Glencairn kicked off the new season with the traditional derby match in the Sectional League Cup. Quite an enthralling match that saw Glens come out on top yet again with a narrow 2-1 win over the local rivals.

The scoreline however fails to tell the whole story as Glens needed 2 goals in the last 8 minutes to see off the lower league side. Cambuslang were left to rue the missed chances during the 90 minutes, and good chances at that.

This turned out to be the game of the 2 penalties that never were, the ref making 2 massive mistakes in awarding 2 very soft spot kicks, 1 for either side but it was the Glens that took full advantage, slotting theirs home for the winner in stoppage time.

Cambuslang can look on a lot of positives this early in the season and it’s the first time in a while that they have actually competed against the Rutherglen side.

Keeper Cuts On Glens Danger

Glencairn picked up a booking after only 6 minutes when McArthur was late with a couple of challenges in quick succession. Cambuslang went close through Murphy, but he blasted over from a good position. Cambuslang should have opened the scoring through Paul Brown a minute later though. But the Lang striker, 1 on 1 with the keeper, pulled the shot wide of the target. Glens hit back instantly and this time they rattled the bar with a McArthur shot. Cambuslang thought they had taken the lead. Murphy had the ball in the net but the ref blew for a foul by the Lang winger, another poor decision from the man in the middle.

Cambuslang hit the woodwork for a 2nd time, Brown delivered a superb cross straight to Murphy but he was unable to keep it down and the ball rattled the bar from 3 yards out and then was cleared by a relieved Glens defence. As play raged up the other end Lang had to rely on Keeper Smith, saving well from McManus who should have done better with the opportunity.

Glens McGovern was again late with a challenge and not for the first time it went unpunished, he was lucky to still be on the park. The game erupted on 40 minutes when Glens were reduced to 10 men. A goalmouth scramble saw Lang Defender and keeper combine to squeeze out Glens attacker Paul Quinn, as more players fought for the ball stuck under Kavanangh, Langs Garry Lynch ended up in the back of the net; this is when the unsavoury incident took place. Glens McManus, right in front of the ref, studded Lynch in the back, leaving the ref with no option but to send the offender for an early bath.

Lang were forced into a change when Brown had to be replaced by Ogilvy after failing to recover from an elbow to the head. Cambuslang had a chance at the end of the half but Smith pulled the effort wide of the target.

Superb Tackle From Kav Started Rammy In Box

Cambuslang picked up a booking a the start of the half when Murphy was cautioned for what appeared a nothing tackle. On the hour mark some fine passing and movement presented Lang with another goal scoring chance but again they failed to take it, the keeper tipped Carson's effort over the bar, a fine stop. Cambuslang finally made the breakthrough on 64minutes. A high ball into the box was fumbled by Glens keeper and it fell for Smith, he fired in a blistering shot that was blocked on the line but Kevin Ogilvy followed up to ram home his first goal for the club.

Glens had to wait until the 81st minute before they had any joy in front of goal. A corner into the penalty area was met by McGovern and his header found the back of the net, all Langs hard work undone with one lapse of concentration.

A Tale Of 2 Penalties That Never Were, Hughes Blasted Lang’s Over The Bar (L) and Glens Scored Theirs

The biggest talking point of the game was about to unfurl as the ref thought he would get involved. Carson was in the box when Glen’s keeper came sliding out and clearly gathered the ball but the ref saw this differently and awarded a spot kick to Cambuslang, much to the surprise of EVERYONE inside Somervell Park. So Cambuslang presented a golden opportunity to wrap up the points. Paul Hughes stepped up but he blasted well over the bar.

The excitement didn't stop there as Glencairn ran up the other end of the park and the ref made another howler, only this time Cambuslang were punished. Lang's Lynch stood his ground as McGladrigan ran into him and ref pointed to the spot. Lynch was booked for a 2nd time in the match so he too was red carded. Glens made no mistake and Fraser fired home for an unlikely win.
