Cambuslang
Rangers 3-1 Arthurlie
Abercorn Builders Premier Division
Saturday 8th September
At Somervell Park
Cambuslang pulled off the shock
of the day when they defeated Premier Champions Arthurlie last weekend. The
comfortable 3-1 victory in front of there own fans was not predicted by many.
Cambuslang were looking to get their league campaign off to a flyer and they
don't come much tougher than this one. The home side was always on top and had
it not been for some slack finishing it could have been a few more.
Cambuslang made one change to the
side that went out of the Sectional League Cup the previous week, Derek
Paterson coming in for the unavailable Kenny Balmain.
The homeside got off the best
possible start and took the lead after only 4 minutes. Centre Half Mattie
Coulter put in a telling cross, which was met by the totally unmarked Billy
Holmes who nodded past Hutchison in the Lie goal. Arthurlie responded immediately
and almost levelled a minute later. Lie's Downs was lurking at the back post
for the cross but Taylor for the Lang headed clear from under his own crossbar.
Fulton then tested Wardlaw with an effort from 12 yards but the keeper fumbled
the ball but gathered at the second attempt. Gauley then fired in a shot, which
was well tipped over the bar by the Lie keeper. Gardiner for the visitors was
first into the referee's note book for dissent, he was followed soon after by
McGarvie for the same offence. Cambuslang almost grabbed a second when everyone
missed Maxwell's inswinging corner but it agonisingly came back off the far
post. Just before the break and the Lang were awarded a penalty. Keeper
Hutchison hauled down Taylor in the box and he was red carded for the foul. Lie
quickly threw on Sub keeper Cormack and he replaced Martin. Maxwell stepped up
to fire the ball past the goalie, who's first touch was to pick the ball out
the net. Cambuslang almost grabbed a third in first half injury time when
Paterson rattled the bar with a long-range effort. Gauley too went close,
forcing the keeper to finger tip his glancing header round the post.
H-T 2-0
Arthurlie made a change at half
time when they brought on Barrett for Fulton. Cambuslang were forced into a change
of their own when Coulter, who took a head knock in the first half, went off to
be replaced by Watson. Cambuslang Taylor found himself in trouble when he
tackled Downs from behind earning himself a yellow card. Arthurlie hauled
themselves back into the game on 50 minutes. Downs bulleted his header past
Wardlaw. Cambuslang restored their 2-goal cushion within a minute, Gauley sent
Holmes through on goal and he calmly slotted the ball past Cormack. Gauley
should have scored a minute later, this time Holmes set him up but he headed
wide from close range. By this time Cambuslang were the more threatening with
very little coming from the visitors. Cambuslang replaced the hard working
Paterson with Daisley, which meant Gauley dropped back into a midfield role.
Arthurlie were awarded a penalty when Kavanagh was adjudged to have handled in
the box. Downs took the kick but he blasted wide of the target. Cambuslang
replaced the injured Mitchell with Simpson and then ran the clock down to seal
a memorable victory.
