Blackburn United 2-0 Cambuslang Rangers

O.V.D. Scottish Junior Cup 2nd Round

Saturday 10th November

at Murrayfield Park

Cambuslang were sensationally dumped out of the Scottish Cup on Saturday by minnows of East Region Football Blackburn United. The second division side should have been no match for the Lang but they had other ideas. Cambuslang failed to trouble the visitors and came away with their tails between their legs after the humiliating 2-0 defeat. This has got to be one of the worst Lang performances for a long time. The home side was clearly more up for this game as the Lang looked to book their spot in the third round draw.

Cambuslang's preparations were thrown into chaos when Stuart Gauley failed to show due to illness. New signing, Gary McGregor, made it onto the bench and Billy Holmes started his first game for 5 weeks.

The home side started the game well enough but soon disappeared out of site and failed to test the keeper on a number of occasions. After only 5 minutes Daisley saw his weak effort easily saved by the Blackburn Keeper. The home side responded through McAuley who saw his free kick deflected inches wide. Cambuslang should have scored 2 goals within a minute but Billy Holmes wasted both chances, the first he ballooned well over the bar and the 2nd was well save although the effort was quite weak. The closest Cambuslang came to scoring in the first half was when Devanney fired in a shot that was going harmlessly wide until it struck Paterson on the shoulder and it bounced just the wrong side of the up right. The home side took a shock lead on 27 minutes. Mark Dunn gave away possession in the middle of the park allowing Lamb who was racing free into the 18-yard box and he steadied himself before clipping the ball over the outrushing 'keeper and into the top corner. Cambuslang were then forced into a change when Doak went off injured to be replaced by Watson.

H-T1-0

Cambuslang were caught napping at the start of the second half and were soon 2 down. The Lang defence were posted missing when Six minutes into the second half and it was two. Ewan broke clear on the right and looked up to flight a wonderful pass deep onto the back post where Lamb had found a yard of space to smash home a cracking volley. Although Cambuslang pushed forward in an attempt to get back into the game it was breaking down all to easily as they were closed down by the hard working Blackburn midfield. Cambuslang last throw of the dice came when they went 3 at the back taking off Coulter and Taylor for McGregor and Maxwell, but neither player had any impact on the game whatsoever. Cambuslang thought they had pulled a goal back through Holmes but the flag was up for offside. Composed defending from Blackburn kept the visitors comfortably at bay and even six minutes of injury time were not enough to prevent this embarrassing and unexpected early exit.
