Cambuslang Rangers 3-1 Lugar Boswell Thistle
Saturday 11th February 2006
at Somervell Park
Cambuslang Rangers have at long last recorded a league victory, for the first time since that 4-3 win over Irvine Meadow in April last year. The signs over the last few weeks have been there that it wouldn't be too long before Cambuslang got their first win in 22 long games.
Manager Scott Archer's optimism of late proved correct and Saturday's 3-1 league win over Lugar was Scott's first as Lang manager. It was a game that Cambuslang had hoped to take the 3 points as Cambuslang look now to finish the season on a high.
Defender Brian Martin came back into the team after missing last week through injury, he replaced Frank McGowan who dropped out of the squad. That was the only change to the starting line up from the side that picked up a point v Beith in the previous match.
Saturday's match was an equally important game for the visitors as they too find themselves occupying the relegation spot and they were also looking to bounce back from the 5-0 hammering they got in their last match v Largs Thistle.
The first real effort of the game arrived after 10 minutes when Hanvey's looping header beat McGovern but it also beat the bar but only just. An early scare for the Lang. Cambuslang's promising striker partnership of Faulds and Anderson was broken up when the latter had to leave the field after picking up an injury minutes earlier. Paul Gilroy taking the role alongside Faulds for the rest of the match.

Cambuslang opened the scoring after 19 minutes. MaAdam saw his drive deflected but the ball fell kindly for Faulds who took a touch before firing it into the net pas the despairing drive of Leavy. A couple of minutes later and McAdam had another effort this time though the Lang mans effort was well saved. Lugar went close on 30 minutes when McMahon fired in an effort that went inches wide although McGovern was confident it was going wide. On 31 minutes Cambuslang doubled their lead. Faulds driven cross was met by Gilroy and his back flick found the back of the net. Cambuslang continued to dominate the match and really should have added to their goal tally. Just before the break McAdam had a chance to put some day light between the sides but his effort found the side net from an acute angle.
Straight after the break and Cambuslang had another great chance to but the game to bed, this time defender Brian Martin went close. He saw his drive well saved by the keeper and the ball came back to him, this time he chipped to the back post where Gilroy was waiting but the Lang striker headed wide from close range when he really should have scored. Minutes later and Gilroy missed another good chance, this time the keeper made a fine stop from the Lang striker.
The visitors pulled a goal back on 54 minutes. Again some poor defending at set pieces cost them dear as Walker was on hand to fire past McGovern from close range. Just how Cambuslang were going to react was the question on everyone's lips, but they needn't have panicked as Cambuslang's restored the 2 goal cushion only a minute later. An excellent run by Faulds took him into the Lugar box before cutting the ball back into the path of McKinnon who rifled home.

Faulds, Scorer Of Cambuslang’s First Goal
Cambuslang had a clear penalty denied when Iron's was clearly fouled in the box, but the ref looked towards the linesman for some help but none was given and play was waived on. Cambuslang went close to grabbing the 4th when Faulds found himself in on goal but his chip was too high and went over the bar, the young striker really should have scored. With 15 minutes remaining Cambuslang picked up their first caution, O'Neil warned for time-wasting. The visitors frustration was beginning to show as they piled into the tackles. Boyle yellow carded after a late challenge on Faulds. On 85 minutes Lang keeper McGovern made his first save of the game, he had to be alert to tip over Walkers dangerous cross. Cambuslang brought on Taylor for Martin and McCracken for McAdam and ran the clock down as they recorded a deserved 1st league win in almost a year.
