Cambuslang Rangers 4-3 Dunipace

Stagecoach Super 1st division

Saturday 11th March 2006

at Somervell Park

Cambuslang Rangers had to battle all the way to claim the 3 points in this tense 7 goal thriller. An excellent start by the home side saw them race into a 2 goal lead after only 7 minutes plus the visitors had their keeper red carded for professional foul. But twice the visitors levelled as Cambuslang slipped back into their old ways of some really poor defending.

Cambuslang made just the one change from the side that beat Rob Roy in their last match, Steven O'Neil was out and his starting slot was taken by Stewart Taylor at full back. Defender Brian Martin had recovered from his injury and he made it onto the bench but midfielder Derek Gemmell was still out.

This game burst into life straight from the kick off, the visitors went close when Pincombe fired wide from a good position. Lang went close when Faulds saw his effort tipped over the bar by the Pace keeper.

With 6 minutes on the clock Cambuslang opened the scoring, Faulds was quick to pounce on a short pass back and he slotted past the exposed keeper to give the Lang the lead. Only a minute later and Cambuslang were awarded a penalty after the Pace keeper hauled down Faulds in the box which also resulted in a red card for the Dunipace stopper. So Dunipace brought on the reserve keeper at the expense of an out field player. The substitute's first involvement was to pick the ball out of the back of the net as Stuart Irons slotted the kick sending the keeper the wrong way.

Irons 2 goal hero

So Cambuslang found themselves 2 up and the opposition down to 10 men. A few minutes later and it really should have been all over but Anderson took far to long on the ball and with only the keeper to beat he hit a weak shot straight at him. The visitors pulled a goal back on 18 minutes. A quick free kick caught out the Lang defence and Rodger slotted past Calder. On the half hour mark Dunipace were level. Rodger again the scorer this time he scored when Cambuslang failed to clear  their lines and he had time to blast by Calder yet again.

Since Cambuslang went two goals up they fell right out of the game and Dunipace looked like they might just run al over Cambuslang, but credit to the Somervell Park side who came roaring back with a fine goal of their own. A great run down the right by McKinnon saw him deliver a fine cross for Anderson who made no mistake in knocking past the keeper from 8 yards. Cambuslang went in at the break with their noses in front but only just. McKinlay for the visitors thought he had scored an excellent gaol, but as it headed for the postage stamp corner Calder in the Lang goal had other ideas and he leaped to touch the ball round the post for a quite stunning save from the young keeper.

H-T 3-2

Only a minute into the second half and Dunipace were level yet again. Rodger beat the offside trap and knocked the ball under Calder for the Pace man's hat trick. The visitors celebrations were cut short when Cambuslang regained the lead a couple of minutes later. Irons on hand to fire past the Pace keeper for the Lang man's second of the game and Cambuslang's fourth. Could they hold onto the lead this time?

Cambuslang had many chances to pout this game to bed but some dodgy finishing and poor defending kept the match finely balanced. Most of Cambuslang's problems were self inflicted by the defence with most of the problems coming down the left hand side. Taylor found himself under protected by McAdam in front of him. In order to amend this Cambuslang made a change by bringing off Taylor to be replaced by Brain Martin, who to be honest suffered the same as Taylor and being right footed did little to help his cause.

there then followed a spate of bookings for both sides as tempers began to flair. Gallagher for the Lang was the first caution and he was quickly followed by Irons. Dunipace didn't escape the wrath of the ref and they had McKinlay booked for persistent fouling.

Cambuslang replaced McAdam on 82 minutes, trialist took his place. Cambuslang were still creating chances in this game but putting them away seemed to be the hard thing. McCracken fired inches wide from the edge of the box. and then Irons fired over from 8 yards out when he should have burst the net. Faulds had a chance to kill the game off with only minutes remaining, but he too fired wide from the edge of the box. Cambuslang replaced Faulds in stoppage time and Gilroy came on.

Cambuslang managed to see the game out and move within touching distance of Dunipace who are now only 3 points ahead of Cambuslang now.
