Cumbernauld United 1-1
Cambuslang Rangers
Abercorn Premeir League
Saturday 11th May
Cambuslang
travelled to Cumbernauld last weekend looking to boost their chances of a top 6
finish. With Cumbernauld fighting relegation they knew this was going to be a
tough encounter.
Manager
Andy Cunningham made one change to the side that had beaten leaders Pollok in
their previous game, out went Alan Paterson to be replaced with Stuart Maxwell.
Stuart Gauley made it onto the bench after recovering from injury.
The
visitors were first to show and were presented a half chance after some sloppy
play at the back by Cumbernauld. Mark Daisley got the ball but his effort was
weak and easily saved by the keeper. The home side responded and should have
taken the lead, McPhee found himself free in the box but he headed over from 6
yards. Cumbernauld were doing all the attacking in the first half and went
close on a number of occasions but couldn't find the back of the net. McPhee
and Rae the guilty ones. The home side finally made the break through on 21
minutes with a bizarre effort. Rae's cross come shot seemed to by pass everyone
and ended up in the back of the net with the Lang defence static. Cambuslang
then saw another chance wasted when Maxwell played in Holmes with a nice pass
but the Lang striker ballooned his shot well over the bar. Near the end of the
half Cambuslang's Robertson and Richardson both picked up bookings for speaking
out of turn.

1-0
Cambuslang
started the second half looking a lot hungrier than in the first. They began to
play some football and push the home side back into their own half for the
first time in the match. Cambuslang had a glorious chance to level things but
Kenny Balmain scooped the ball over the bar from all of 6 yards. Minutes later
Gary Robertson fired a free kick inches wide of the post with the keeper rooted
to the spot. On the hour mark Cambuslang through on Gauley and Paterson for
Gilhaney and Richardson in an attempt to get back on level terms. Cumbernauld
picked up there first booking for a poor challenge on Taylor saw Rae booked. Stuart
Maxwell then saw his free kick take a slight deflection and went just wide of
the target. Just as it looked like the Cumbernauld were going to hang on for
the win Cambuslang were awarded a penalty kick with 8 minutes remaining.
The keeper came for a ball that was not really his to claim and bundled over
Daisley and the ref awarded the Lang the spot kick. Stuart Maxwell stepped up
and despatched the ball into the bottom corner for a vital point that for long
spells didn’t look like coming. Cambuslang then went looking for the winner and
almost got it when Stuart Gauley got up well at the back post to head Maxwell's
cross but a fine save by the keeper who put the ball over the bar. The home
side should have won it themselves in stoppage time but McPhee fired well wide
with only the keeper to beat.
