Saturday 12th August
Cambuslang continued where they
left off on Wednesday with another fine display this time against East
Kilbride. the homeside gave a start to new boy John McCabe whom they signed
from Cambuslang that morning. Cambuslang recalled keeper Alan Wardlaw in place
of McDougall and Richardson was replaced by the fit again Kenny Balmain.
Cambuslang posted their
intentions as early as the 5th minute when Maxwell put in a telling cross but
Holmes could only direct it into the keepers arms. A minute later and Maxwell's
quick feet allowed him time to fire in a shot which flew narrowly over. On the
26 minutes Maxwell opened the scoring and it was a fine goal at that, he
latched onto Devanneyss through ball wide on the left before cutting inside and
coolly lobbed the ball over the advancing keeper and into the net, fine finish
from the Lang midfielder. East Kilbride didn't register a shot at goal until
the 33rd minute when Brogan could only find the side netting. Only a minute
later they were gifted another chance when a rare mistake by Doak allowed
Walker in on goal but Wardlaw saved well. Both Holmes and Gauley saw efforts
saved just before the break.
H-T 0-1
Cambuslang Devanney went close at
the start of the second half but his shot narrowly missed the far post. East
Kilbride's Murray should have got the equaliser when he got on the end of
Fairley's cross but he put it wide. Maxwell then tested the keeper from
distance and his effort was parried onto the bar but Holmes couldn't convert
the follow up and the defence cleared. Cambuslang grabbed the killer second and
what a goal it was. After a few shots in the box the ball was bouncing all over
the place when Holmes had another effort blocked but the ball bounced into the
air and the quick thinking Gauley, with his back to goal, through himself at it
and with a spectacular over head scored with the keeper looking on in
disbelief. Cambuslang had a couple of chances at the end to [put a few more
past them but some fortunate keeping kept them out.
