Cambuslang Rangers eased into the 2nd round of the 'Scottish'
with a resounding 8-0 victory over Brechin Vics on Saturday. The visitors were
a very poor and also looked a very young side but take nothing away from the
Lang who took the north side apart. The visitors failed to get one shot on
target in the whole 90 minutes with the Lang keeper a virtual spectator.
The writing was on the wall as early as the first minute when
Brown missed to chances in quick succession. But the breakthrough came after 4
minutes when McCrae opened the scoring and started what turned out to be a
tout. He sprung a poor attempt at offside and easily slotted past the advancing
keeper. Cambuslang were creating chance after chance as the visitors never got
time to settle and skipper Billy Holmes should have made 2 a minute later but
he headed wide from close range. Burns then forced the keeper into a fine stop
after he latched onto Brown's pass. Cambuslang missed a glorious chance to add
a second when Brown beat the keeper to a long through ball but his shot towards
the empty net from 25 yards went inches wide of the goal. On the half hour mark
Cambuslang were awarded their 5th penalty in 4 games when there was a hand ball
in the box. Carmichael stepped up and calmly slotted the ball home to settle
any nerves the Lang may have had. The chances of this becoming another banana
skin were quickly diminished and no repeat of a Lanark or Blackburn result
here. £ minutes later and Cambuslang were 3 up this time through Brown who
grabbed his first off the afternoon. His drive from the edge of the box gave
the keeper no chance. The first half ended with yet another goal and Brown
added his second after good work by McCrae set him up with an easy chance which
he duly took.
H-T 4-0
Cambuslang scored straight from the kick off this time full back
Burns got in on the action driving home from 12 yards. Cambuslang replaced Doak
with Watson early in the half. Cambuslang went close through skipper Billy
Holmes but his 20 yard drive was tipped over the bar by the busy Vics keeper.
The home side added a 5th when a quick short corner by McCrae and Burns caught
out the home defence and McCrae's cross was met by Carmichael who angled his header
into the far corner of the net for a nice finish. It was 7 after 65
minutes. Brown crossed for McCrae who slotted home. Brown was then replaced by
McCarroll. Then Cambuslang brought on Love for Galloway. The rout was completed
on 85 minutes when substitute Love cheekily back heeled the ball home from 3
yards after Burns low drive into the box was not cut out.
