St Anthony's 1-4 Cambuslang Rangers

Central Region 1st Division

Saturday 11th October 2008

at McKenna Park

Cambuslang Rangers picked up another valuable 3 points at the weekend after a fairly comfortable 4-1 win over St Anthony's at the weekend. Credit firstly must go to the Ants and their ground staff who had the playing surface looking immaculate despite the amount of rain that had fell previous which also claimed a number of games.

Cambuslang made only the one change from the side that exited the cup in their last game, Ferguson was restored to the starting line up with Templeton dropping to the bench.

The visitors made a blistering start of the game and had the Ants hemmed in their own half for most of the first 45 minutes. 3 goals in the opening 20 minutes all but killed the match. Lang opened the scoring after only 8 minutes when a mix up in the defence allowed Donaldson in for his first goal since joining Cambuslang. The Ants had a few good chances of their own when they did get forward but some poor finishing cost the Govan side. On 10 minutes they had an excellent chance to level but Cumming fired over the bar from only 5 yards out, a poor miss from the Ants striker.

Cambuslang doubled their lead on 12 minutes. Queen had his initial shot blocked but the ball fell kindly for him and he blasted home at the second attempt. On 20 minutes the Lang went 3 up. A deep cross picked out the un-marked Sweeney at the back post and he nodded into the net. The home side were forced into a change when Williams was introduced to the action. There was a flare up just before the break when Langs keeper Connolly and Ants Ford clashed. The Lang keeper fumbled a cross and both players battled to get the ball which Connolly took exception and two heads were put together but the ref elected only to book both players..

The Ants were given a bit of a lift right at the start of the 2nd half when they pulled a goal back. For about 10 minutes it looked like they were going to get back into the game as they began to create a few chances of their own. But Cambuslang regrouped and started to produce the form that they showed in the first half. Cambuslang grabbed the all important 4th goal on 52 minutes. Donaldson's cross picked out Sweeney and his diving header bounced up over the keeper for his 2nd of the game.

The Ants picked up a booking on 59 minutes when A3 was cautioned for speaking out of turn. A couple of minutes and Cambuslang went close to adding a 5th but Donaldson pulled his effort just wide of the post. The home side made another change on the hour mark. Japp was replaced with Callaghan

Kenna With Important Clearance

Donaldson Held The Ball Up Well

Cambuslang defender Craig Ferguson went close. he fired in a blistering shat that rattled off the underside of the crossbar before it was cleared. Cambuslang replaced Kenna with Paul Hughes on 66 minutes. The home side forced Connolly into action. A9 fired in a shot which the keeper did well to tip over the bar. The visitors then replaced Ogilvie with Miller and Marshall came on for the injured Sweeney near the end.

There was another flare up on the far side of the park when Mansare appeared to try and stamp on the back of Miller but the Big guy escaped unpunished. Cambuslang ran down the clock and secured the 3 points that seen them move up the table into 5th spot 3 points behind leaders Glencairn who have played a game less.
