Cambuslang
welcomed Cumbernauld United to Somervell on Saturday for a tough league
encounter. The visitors were sitting pretty in 2nd spot prior to Saturdays game having only lost once in their
previous 11 matches. Cambuslang were looking to avenge the defeat
suffered at the hands of Cumbernauld in the first league game of the season
away back in August. Cambuslang were hoping to bounce back from last weeks cup exit and manager Alan Wardlaw made a couple of
enforced changes to that side. Tam
Kilmartin was still suffering from the knock picked up v Glencairn as was
Mark Templeton so both failed to make the squad. Bobby Thomson and Andy
McFarlane made the starting line up. Brian Smith dropped to the bench.
Craig Ferguson had recovered from flu and he was on the bench. This
game, on paper, looked like a tasty encounter but it was far from it as both teams huffed and puffed their way
through a pretty drab 90 minutes. It was yet another game that Cambuslang
failed to see out despite taking the lead. Chances were few and far between
as was goal mouth action. Cumbernauld
were the first to threaten and are probably still wondering how they never
scored after this passage of play. On 12 minutes the first real effort at
goal came from the head of defender Will, but Connolly in the Lang goal made
a superb save. From the resulting corner Connolly was again involved and 3
excellent saves, one after the other, kept the Lang goal in tact. up the other end Cambuslang tested the Nauld keeper with a
Sammy Sweeney header but that was it as far as goalmouth action went and both
teams trudged in level at the break. H-T 0-0 Cambuslang
started a little brighter in the 2nd half and were unlucky not to open the
scoring on 48 minutes Thomson shot on the turn but it was well saved and then
a minute later Thomson was onto a Donnelly pass and again his shot was
well saved. Cumbernauld were lucky to keep 11 men on the park when Gibson
clearly head butted Inglis right in front of the referee but only a booking
followed. There
was a sickening blow of heads when Bishop and Will clashed in the box, but
thankfully both players recovered and played on. Cambuslang
made the breakthrough on 62 minutes. McFarlane bust into the box and got a
kind break before blasting the ball into the net despite the keepers efforts to keep it out but the power was to much
for the Nauld keeper. Cambuslang made a double change almost immediately,
both strikers, Donnelly and McCrae were replaced by
Smith and As
has been Lang's problem in the last couple of games, they just cant seem to hold a lead and Cumbernauld hit back on 70
minutes. A corner into the box wasn't dealt with by the Lang defence and this
allowed Marsh in who stooped to head home from 6 yards out with the Lang back
line static. There
was a bizarre incident a few minutes later when Lang's Bishop was yellow
carded, it turned out he had left the field to change his boots without the
ref's permission and was cautioned. Cambuslang
