East Kilbride Thistle 2-4 Cambuslang Rangers
Sectional
League Cup
at The
Showpark
Cambuslang Rangers remain in contention for a Quarter Final spot
after a hard fought 4-2 win over EK at the weekend. Despite the horrendous run
of injuries it was a credit to the manager that he managed to get a team on the
park at all. Leaders Glencairn remain 3 points clear at the top of the group
but The Lang are breathing down their necks and any slips ups by any team could
be disastrous.
Cambuslang welcomed back into the side defender Martin Feenie who
missed the previous match due to work commitments. Gary McGregor recovered from
a knock and took up his place in defence, Graham Doak was not so lucky and had
to sit this one out as did striker Paul Brown as both failed to recover from
the injuries previously picked up.
Cambuslang were out the starting blocks like a Greyhound and
seemed to catch the home side sleeping, and indeed took the lead inside the
opening minute. Willie Galloway picked up the ball just inside his own half and
played a excellent pass into the path of Jamie McCarroll who cut into the box
and unleashed a tremendous shot past the helpless McDonald in the EK goal. A
great move finished with a great strike. EK responded immediately and but for a
fine stop by Rowan in the Lang goal could have been level. Menelaws the striker
who's shot was stopped. With 15 minutes gone Cambuslang sweeper and ex-EK
player Martin Feenie was floored with a very poor challenge above the knee
which went unpunished by the referee, a poor decision. 5 minutes later and EK
miss of the match, a long hopeful ball into the box was missed by the Lang
defence and Menelaws headed wide from 6 yards when it looked easier to score.
Lang's McCrae tested the keeper with a fine turn and shot which was tipped
round the post. EK thought they had been awarded a penalty when Brownlee and
Ferguson clashed in the box but the referee had blown for a free kick to the
visitors after Brownlee had a kick at Ferguson resulting in the first booking
of the match. Only 3 minutes later and the same player picked up his second
booking after another off the ball clash and the referee showed the EK man a
red card for his troubles. EK Penman was yellow carded soon after for a poor
challenge.Just before the break and the visitors doubled their lead. Galloway
again involved and he fed Ferguson who's shot sneaked in at the far post.
H-T 0-2
At the start of the second half it looked although the visitors
had failed to show as EK scored 2 quick goals to level the match. EK had there
coach ordered to the dressing rooms for 1 moan to many . The 10 man EK had
clearly been given a rollicking at half time and came out all guns blazing as
the threatened to blow Cambuslang away. A long ball over the top of the Lang
defence was met by Feenie but he was short with the header back to the keeper,
as he and Mennelaws went for the ball the Ek player went to ground, the referee
not only awarded a penalty but red carded the Lang defender too, a double error
as the tackle was clearly outside the area and it was a genuine effort to play
the ball. Cambuslang were clearly rattled by this and Watson kept his cool as
he blasted the spot kick past Rowan. EK with their tales up went gunning for
the Lang an drew level only a minute later. A speculative effort by Mennelaws
was seen late by Rowan who did well just to keep the initial shot out but he
parried it onto the path of on rushing ? who blasted past the stranded Lang
goalie. As the game threatened to boil over there were a couple of bookings for
both sides. Langs Graham and McCrae were yellow carded for separate incidents
and EK Sweeney cautioned too. Cambuslang made a change in an attempt to regain
control of a match that was threatening to get away from them. Skipper Billy
Holmes was replaced by Scanlon in attack. Cambuslang regained the lead through
McCrae. He was played in by Ferguson and the Lang man skipped past a couple of
challenges before firing into the back of the net. Cambuslang then replaced
McGregor with Burns. 3 minutes later and Cambuslang all but sealed the win.
McCrae turned provider this time and he played in sub Scanlon who turned and
placed his shot past the EK keeper. Lang replaced McCrae with Richie Love
giving the Lang striker some much need match fitness after a lengthy spell on
the side lines. Cambuslang looked to have added a fifth but Scanlon's effort
was ruled out for offside. EK had the last chance of the match but Mennelaws
effort was cleared off the line by Burns.
