Cambuslang Rangers 1-2 East Kilbride Thistle

Sectional League Cup

Wednesday 18th August 2007

at Somervell Park

Cambuslang Rangers 2nd game in the Sectional League cup ended pointless for the second game in a row. The home side will be disappointed with the result after a very good performance in the 1st half, but an improved EK took the game to Cambuslang in the 2nd 45 and duly left with all 3 points.

The biggest talking point was the poor performance from the referee who baffled everyone at the game by waiving yellow and red cards at every opportunity. And not a poor tackle in sight, well there was one unsavoury moment but that went unpunished during the game.

Cambuslang felt the wrath of the official and had assistant manager Tam Miller and Coach Jamie Bruce both sent off for disputing his very poor decisions.

Lang Went Close With This Effort

The visitors opened the scoring on 14 minutes when a long through ball beat the Lang offside trap, although it did look very close, and Clung took it down well and slotted past the Lang goalie Smith. EK were still in celebration mode when the home side levelled within a minute. Paul Brown getting up well to nod home Doherty's corner from 8 yards out. Minutes later and Lang went close with a shot from Devine that flew inches over the bar.

The visitors had goalkeeper McDonald to thank for keeping the scores levels in the 25th minute. Some good link-up play between Hughes and James Smith, allowed the latter to force a great double save from the EK keeper stopper. The first of Langs red cards arrived on 30 minutes Miller ordered off after a hotly disputed decision from the EK linesman giving a ball out that was at least a yard still in play. But Miller protested too much according to the ref and sent him off. A laughable decision. The 1 bad tackle in the game came when Lynch was caught very late by EK's Ward.

The visitors should have taken the lead on 37 minutes but Ward put his effort just wide of the target. Cambuslang then saw their coach Jamie Bruce double yellow carded for expressing his opinions to the ref who was in no mood for it, off he went also.

Craig Ferguson Closes Down EK Attacker

Jim Kavanagh With Fine Saving Tackle

Just after the break Lang went close with a Brown free kick that came back off the post and cleared. A fine sweeping move seen Cambuslang swing from one end of the park to the other. Hughes set Brow on his way and his cross found Ogilvy and just as he was about to pull the trigger a fine last gasp tackle by Ward cleared the danger. Chances were coming thick and fast in the second half but EK were having the bulk of the play at this stage.

The visitor’s persistence looked to have paid off when Hughes was adjudged to have fouled in the box. Cunning stepped up but Lang's Smith pulled off an excellent stop and even the 3 yard tap in that awaited the spot kicker couldn't be converted as he ballooned the rebound over the bar. A let off for the Lang. EK scored what turned out to be the winner on 85 minutes. And it was EX Lang striker Alan McCrae with a fine finish. He fired his strike into the top right corner giving Smith no chance.
