Cambuslang Rangers failed to make the knockout stages of the
Sectional League Cup after a crushing 3-0 defeat to eventual group winners East
Kilbride Thistle.
Cambuslang Keeper Stevie McGovern had a nightmare between the
sticks and had a portion of the blame in ALL EK goals. Some calamity antics
cost the Somervell Park side dear and indeed could have found themselves on an
even heavier defeat had EK take more of the opportunities that came their way.
It was a pretty even start to the match particularly
in the early stages when the pace was frenetic. Last-ditch
tackles and petty fouls dominated to the extent that it was 20 minutes
after kick-off before either keeper was called into action when
an 18-yard James Coulter shot ended in the arms of visitors'
keeper McDonald.
Defender Paul Watson unleashed a 30-yard shot which although on
target appeared easy for McGovern. He could have
comfortably tipped the effort over the bar but he attempted to catch
the ball but only to spill it into the path of McLung who shot
home from a tight angle.
McGovern's second blunder of the match followed on 51 minutes.
This time Watson hoofed a clearance upfield which bounced awkwardly on the left
edge of Cambuslang's penalty area. It completely
deceived McGovern who was then stranded in no-man's land as McLung again
fired into an empty net. The visitors went onto dominate most of the 2nd period
and indeed the third goal arrived in injury time and yet again McGovern played
a big part in it. He just seem to lose his bearings or something and threw the
ball straight to EK's Watson who slotted home the third and final goal.
