Benburb F.C. 3-0 Cambuslang Rangers
Saturday 18th March 2006
at Tinto Park
Cambuslang Rangers crashed out of the Central League Cup at the first round hurdle after a woeful display against a side that is near the bottom of the Central 2nd division. Although Benburb seem to be going through a mini revival of their own, Cambuslang should still have been able to win this one.
Cambuslang need to start asking questions, just when you think that they seem to be putting a bit of form together they serve up this drivel, which at times was embarrassing.
The second division side were well organised and disciplined as Cambuslang failed to make the Bens keeper make a serious save. Yet again there was very little for the Cambuslang Rangers forwards to feed off as few chances were being created from midfield.
The continued absence of Derek Gemmell in this department is not helping neither did the omission of striker Derek Anderson, whom injured himself at training on Thursday Evening.
So with Anderson ruled out through injury, this meant a start for Paul Gilroy who would partner Chris Faulds up front. This was the only change since their 4-3 league win over Dunipace.
Cambuslang went into the game full of confidence as they had begun to pick up some points in the league and welcomed the break from the pressures of trying to win every league point available from now until the end of the season.
The game itself was not a pretty spectacle although Benburb may say otherwise as it was a big scalp for a team also rebuilding.
Irons (white) Closed Down
Cambuslang started well enough but some sloppy finishing from the forwards failed to trouble the Bens keeper. With 9 minutes on the clock Gilroy had a half chance but he saw his effort easily saved by Connolly. A few minutes later and another decent chance came Cambuslang's way but this time it was Irons who shot weakly at the keeper who gathered rather easily. The home side, although had most of the ball, rarely threatened Calder in the Lang goal. In fact it was a full 30 minutes before their first effort at goal, which was put wide although Calder seemed to have it, covered.

Brian Martin threatens At The Other end
Benburb opened the scoring when a mistake in the middle of the park gave possession away and it was punished when skipper Andy Noble sliding challenge missed everything and this allowed Finan to score from close range. Only 5 minutes later and it was 2-0. A long punt up the park caught Cambuslang napping. Gray failed to clear and the keeper was out of gaol and O'Neil headed over the stranded keeper.
The home side should have wrapped up the game 2 minutes later but Finan sliced his effort wide from 6 yards. Both Gallagher and Noble had a heated exchange at this point as tempers flared. In the final minute of the half Cambuslang picked up a booking when Taylor was yellow carded after a late challenge.
Bens On Attack
Cambuslang had an early chance to get them back in the tie. Faulds found himself inside the box but the Lang man decided to shoot from an acute angle and sliced it wide when there were player waiting in the middle. Cambuslang had McAdam booked after a deliberate handball. The Lang man was soon replaced when Martin came on for him.
Cambuslang were not making any in roads and it was Benburb doing most of the pressing and could have added to their score. Cambuslang seemed to be at 6's and 7's at the back. Although the midfield were giving no protection whatsoever.
The tie was all but over when Benburb grabbed a third. The goal all but summed up Cambuslang Rangers day. A hopeful cross into the box was deflected past his own keeper by skipper Andy noble. This rounded off quite a miserable afternoon of the Somervell Park boys, but Benburb were delighted and rightly so.
As a last through of the dice Cambuslang threw on O'Neil and McElhone but it made no difference as Benburb ran out very comfortable winners in the end and go through to face Renfrew in the second round.
