Blantyre Vics 3-4 Cambuslang Rangers

Sectional League Cup

Saturday 18th August 2007

at Castle Park

Cambuslang travelled the short distance to Blantyre for the next round of Sectional games still looking for the first win in the competition. The game was in doubt right up until Kick Off due to the very heavy rain that had been falling all night. But credit to Vics ground staff for getting it playable.

Manager Alan Wardlaw went with a very experimental line up and formation a 3-4-3 to see how certain players could adapt to change. The game was full of goals, 7 to be exact, in a match that swung from one end of the park to the other. Treacherous underfoot conditions added spice the match. Vics had two ex-Lang players in their line up, Kerr Gray and Kevin Coyle opting to sign for the club a league above Cambuslang.

Cambuslang opened the scoring courtesy of a Paul Hughes spot kick after Docherty was brought down.

Vics drew level with the Lang defence posted missing allowing the striker too much time and he picked his spot and slotted home.

Cambuslang almost went back in front courtesy of an Ogilvy drive but Vic’s keeper produced a fine stop.

Cambuslang went back in front before the break when the keeper could only parry a Smith drive and the ball fell for Ogilvy to score.

H-T 1-2

Cambuslang stretched their lead in the first minute of the 2nd half, Ogilvy dummied the ball and it came to Barton who fired into the top corner. Cambuslang were in total command at this point and then they seemed to turn off allowing the home side back into the game.

Both keepers were kept busy as play swung from end to end.

Vics pulled a goal back when the ball was headed down in the box for Fraser to slot home.

A disaster looked to be on the cards when Vics drew lever from the spot. Fraser fell over in the box but the ref awarded a penalty and it was Ex Lang player Kevin Coyle. And he stepped up and sent Smith the wrong way.

There was another twist in this match as Cambuslang scored the winner. Ten minutes to go Gers got winner Sub 14 won ball in midfield and a great passing move left Devine in the clear to shoot home
