Cambuslang Rangers travelled to the
scene of their Scottish Cup 2nd round win only a few weeks ago, Tinto Park
Benburb. But this trip was to be a totally different affair as they were well
and truly beaten by the Govan side 3 goals to two. The game wasn't as close
as the score line suggests and Cambuslang can thank themselves lucky not to
have conceded a few more. It was a bad day at the office for the
Lang who started well enough but fell completely out the game midway through
the first half. Cambuslang made a couple of changes to last weeks side that
drew with Vale of Leven. Esplin was ruled out with a tight hamstring. MacLeod
dropped to the bench, Keeper McGraw took over in goals as |

The visitors started well enough and
indeed opened the scoring with their first real attack of the game after 10
minutes. McCabe found A couple of minutes later and the home
side were almost level but for a fine save from keeper McGraw who blocked
with his legs. There was a highly controversial moment in the match when Bens
keeper pulled down Malone in the box and then appeared to handle outside the
area, it was either a penalty kick to the Lang or a red card for the keeper
for handling outside the area. But the ref awarded Cambuslang a free kick outside
the box and only booked the keeper, as poor a decision as your are ever
likely to see. Play raged on and the home side went
close again and Lang keeper McGraw came to their rescue with another fine
save. On 35 minutes Cambuslang had a chance to grab another goal, Mackie with
a fine shot on the turn that went inches wide of the post that the keeper was
scrambling to get to. With the interval looming Cambuslang
conceded a sloppy equaliser. The long ball back over the top caught the Lang
out and Bens levelled. |

Bens came out with their tales up and
almost scored straight from kick off but the strikers effort rattled the bar
and went over, much to the relief of Lang fans. With Lang getting pushed
deeper and deeper gaps were appearing in the Lang defence and it looked only
a matter of time before the home side got another. And that's exactly what happened. Although it was a poor decision to
award the home side a penalty after the striker appeared to fall over his own
feet, but the ref bought it and awarded the kick that was converted to give
the home side a 2-1 lead after an hour. Lang's Mark Bishop picked up a
booking, for telling the ref just how poor a performance he was having. |

Cambuslang replaced Mackie with
Stevenson in an attempt to inject some much needed pace into the game. On 75
minutes the visitors had a half chance when Kilmartin found himself in the
box, but his effort came off his knee and over the bar, the ball just
wouldn't sit for him. With 15 minutes remaining, some
calamitous defending seen Lang concede a third. They had umpteen chances to
get the ball clear but never managed it and this allowed Bens in for a third. |

There was still some action to come
with 5 minutes left on the clock. Bens keeper lay flat out claiming he had
been elbowed and as he was challenged for feigning injury, he sprung to life
and started arguing with Lang players who weren't conned by his antics. Graham Jaap had actually headed the
ball into the net but this was ruled out because of the keepers alleged
injury. It leaves a bad taste in the mouth when things like that happen in
the game. It was plain cheating by the Bens
keeper and he got away with it. |
