Cambuslang Rangers 1-1 Vale of Clyde
(Vale win 4-1 on Pens)
West of Scotland Cup 1st Round
Saturday 20th September 2008
at Somervell Park
It was super
premier side Vale of Clyde that moved into the 2nd round of the west at the
weekend courtesy of a 4-1 spot kick win over Cambuslang. The match had ended
1-1 after 90 mins and it was the Tollcross Park side
that were the more lethal in the shoot out. Yet again Cambuslang were left
disappointed with the cup K.O. but have to remember that this side are 2
leagues above.
Cambuslang made
a couple of changes to the side that beat Vale of Leven last week. Santi was
unavailable as was Ferguson. Renwick made a start and also new signing Ross
Donaldson kept his place up front.

The game itself
was a pretty even affair from start to finish and both sides were playing some
nice football, especially in the first 45 minutes. There were very few real
clear cut chances for either side. The best came on 12 minutes. Sinclair for
the Vale shot from the edge of the penalty box and forced Lang keeper Connolly
into a fine save that he palmed to safety. Vale went close again when Johnstone
shot but this was again well saved by the Lang goalie. Lang's best effort of
the half fell to Ogilvie. The Vale keeper failed to collect the ball and this
allowed Ogilvie in, but the Lang striker fired over with the gaol gapping.
Bishop was first into the ref’s book and it did appear to be a very soft award.
The game bust into life after a shocking two footed lunge by Ex-Lang player
Johnson and he caught Irvine. The Lang player reacted by pushing Johnstone to
the ground and clearly should have walked, but the ref appeared to miss the
push and only booked Vales Johnstone for the tackle. Vale then had McLaughlin booked
for protesting the decision. Lang had one last chance in the half but Donaldson
saw his effort saved by eh Vale keeper.

Vale Take The Lead From The Spot |
4 minutes after
the restart and the visitors were awarded a soft penalty kick. McLaughlin
stepped up and sent Connolly the wrong way to give the Vale the lead. That lead
was short lived though as Cambuslang levelled within 3 minutes. A hand ball in
the box was penalised and Queen was on target from the spot for the Lang. A
couple of minutes later and Lang should have been in front but Ogilvie shot
straight at the keeper from a good position. Vale made a double change on the
hour mark. Mackin and Morrison came on for Wilson and McDonald. Lang picked up
a caution when Templeton was yellow carded for a late challenge. A minute later
and Vale were down to 10 men. McLaughlin booked for moaning at the ref yet
again.
Cambuslang
replaced the injured Queen with Paul Hughes getting a run out. On 70 minutes
Cambuslang made another couple of changes. Donaldson was replaced with Miller
and Dick came on for Renwick. With 8 minutes left Lang keeper Connolly produced
another fine stop this time saving a fine effort from Sub O'Leary. Dick went
close for the home side when his effort went narrowly wide of the far post. As
the game edged towards the penalty kicks Vale sub Mackin had an excellent
chance to win the tie, but he miss kicked right in front of goal.
There were then
a couple of bookings for the visitors. McGregor, Mackin and Johnstone were all
cautioned. As was Lang's Miller. As the final whistle went Vales Johnstone went
for the Lang keeper and was then shown a 2nd yellow. As he was leaving the park
he was still seething at something and was shown another red card by the
ref. as players jostled and officials form Vale made their way onto the park.
The ref managed to restore order and it was down to the penalty kicks.
It was a poor
start for Cambuslang and they missed their first 3 with the Vale scoring
all theirs. Paul Hughes was the only Lang player to find the back of the net
and this left the way clear for Vale to record a comfortable 4-1 win on
penalties.
