Cambuslang Rangers 4-0 East Kilbride Thistle

West of Scotland Cup 1st Round

Saturday 20th October 2007

at Somervell Park

Cambuslang Rangers produced their best display for a long time at the weekend when the dumped East Kilbride Thistle out of the West of Scotland Cup. A resounding 4-0 result was no more than the Somervell Park side deserved as everything seemed to click into place for the first time in a long, long time.

With so many plus points to mention it is only fair that Derek Kennedy gets a special mention. The striker was asked to play in a makeshift midfield, and what a game he had. With some superb passing and tackling he may just have made the position his own. Gary Lynch also had his best game in a Lang jersey; he scored the opener that set the Lang on their way.

With Paul Brown having been placed on the transfer list it was up to Cameron and Ogilvey up front, this is shaping up to be quite a good partnership. Cambuslang were struggling with injuries, much so that coach Stewart Taylor was named among the subs. Ferguson dropped from midfield into the full back position after a no show from Bishop. Kavanagh, Docherty and Hewitt were all ruled out.

Lang Celebrate Lynch Opener

Lynch Keeps Tabs On EK Attacker

It was a decent start from both sides and EK were first to threaten. They fired in a shot but Smith in the Lang goal gathered well. After only 8 minutes Cambuslang went in front. A deep corner was knocked back across goal and defender Gary Lynch was in the right spot to head home off the underside of the bar. A dream start for the Somervell side. 10 minutes later and Ogilvey had a chance but his effort deflected inches wide of the post with the keeper rooted to the spot. Cambuslang managed to grab a second, and what a strike it was. Ferguson picked up the ball about 25 yards out and unleashed a superb strike that flew into the corner of the net. Cambuslang suffered a scare when Lynch required treatment for a head knock, he appeared to be caught by the elbow of the EK midfielder but he was able to continue and the player went unpunished.

Doak was first into the ref’s book, and it was a really poor decision from the ref. On 28 minutes things got even better for Cambuslang as they grabbed a third, another stunning strike from distance by Ferguson had a similar result to the first as it flew past the EK goalie. A rare chance for the visitors came from ex-Lang player Alan McCrae, but he pulled the effort wide from 12 yards out, his frustrations got the better of him and he was cautioned soon after. Just before the break and EK picked up a booking for persistent fouling.

Lynch Keeps Eye On The Ball

H-T 3-0

East Kilbride replaced McCrae at the start of the half, the players booking in the first half a major factor in this move. The change did very little in altering the pattern of play as Cambuslang dominated possession and limiting EK to very few chances and anything that did sneak it's way through, Smith in Cambuslang's goal was equal to it.

Ogilvey had a chance after the restart his shot on the turn was well saved by EK's keeper. That didn't stop the Lang striker though, a minute later and from a similar position he tried his luck again from a bout 12 yards and this time the effort nestled in the back of the net. On the hour mark EK's best chance of the game came after mistake by Lynch but the EK attacker seen his shot superbly saved by Smith.

Barton Closes Down

Cameron Effort Inches Wide

Some sloppy defending almost allowed EK in again but another point blank stop from Smith kept his goal in tact.

Cambuslang were tiring slightly but were still able to knock the ball about and make EK look like the 2nd division side at times. The home side ran down the clock and move into the 2nd round of the competition.
