Cambuslang Rangers Scottish cup run
came to a halt at the 4th round stage when super-league side Shotts left It was a wonder the game was allowed
to be played as the park cut up very badly and both teams were unable to move
the ball on the surface as they would have liked. But after an early morning pitch
inspection, the match referee declared the pitch playable so on the game
went. Cambuslang made some changes and there
were a couple of regulars dropped to the bench for this important cup tie,
Kilmartin and Malone missed out while Mackie and Stevenson were given the
opportunity to star up front. Bishop was back in the squad as he had missed
the last couple of games due to work commitments. |

It was the worst possible start for
the home side when they fell behind after only 4 minutes. The Shotts goal was
all about sheer luck than anything else. McKenzie, who looked a yard offside
was allowed to play on and his shot, which looked to be going well wide, was
blocked by Timoney but the ball spun up and over the head of keeper
Montgomery and into the back of the net. Both teams, to their credit, tried to
get the ball down and knock it about but it just wasn't possible as the game
became bogged down on the heavy surface. Shotts tested Lang keeper on 18
minutes, this time a fine drive from Ex-Lang defender Paul Burns saw |

The wind was so strong that Lang
keeper Montgomery saw a few of his bye kicks go out the park, one almost went
for a corner, it was that bad at times. There were a couple of silly bookings
at the end of the half, first into the book went Fraser for the Lang and he
was soon followed by Sullivan for a poor challenge on Morgan and then McStay
was cautioned for a stupid dive trying to earn his side a penalty. The correct decision. |

With the gale force wind at their back
in the 2nd half, Cambuslang didn't really take full advantage of it, similar
to Shotts in the first. The home side had a half chance on 57 minutes but
Morgan shot straight at the keeper. The visitors doubled their lead on the
hour mark, and it was a well worked goal on a tricky surface. But Cambuslang
defence could and should have done better. Some nice inter-passing saw them
work the ball into the Lang box but not a tackle was made and this allowed
Sullivan the simplest of chances as he tapped home from close range. On 63 minutes, the stupidest booking
you will ever see was when Shotts Ferguson, for whatever reason, thought it a
good idea just to hump the ball out the park, right in front of the referee.
The time wasting from the visitors had been going on since the 12th minute of
the 2nd half, but it also went unpunished also. |

Cambuslang made a double change on 65
minutes. Mackie and Morgan were replaced with Kilmartin and Malone and it
wasn't long before Cambuslang were back in the game. Malone's in-swinging corner was missed
by everyone, including the keeper and flew into the top corner of the net,
the first player to really use the wind to his advantage and it seemed to
give Cambuslang the lift they so much needed. Lang were doing the pressing by this
stage as they went in hunt for an equaliser but it wasn't to be and Shotts
held out for the remaining minutes and book their slot in the last 16. |
