Maryhill 3-2 Cambuslang Rangers

Central Region 1st Division

Saturday 23rd August

at Lochburn Park

Some really poor defending cost Cambuslang the 3 points at Maryhill on Saturday, writes Jim Logan. The narrow 3-2 defeat was a hard one to take for Lang supporters who had seen their side recover from conceding the first goal but a double from Chris Queen saw Lang go in ahead at the break.

Graham Doak kept his starting place at the expense of O'Donnell. That was the only change from the side that defeated Super League side Vale of Clyde last week.

The game itself started pretty slowly with both sides cutting out some decent chances. The home side went close on 9 minutes when Hobbs header went just past Connolly's right hand post. A few minutes later and they really should have been in front but somehow Hobbs shot wide from 3 yards out. The opening goal came on 19 minutes. A deep cross wasn't dealt with the Lang defence and Hobbs rose, unchallenged, to nod into the net. Cambuslang had strong appeals for a penalty waived away after the ball appeared to be played by the hand of Robertson.

On the half hour mark Cambuslang were level. A quick break up the park saw Chris Queen latch onto the superb pass. As the keeper advanced towards him he calmly lobbed the ball over him and into the empty net. 3 minutes later and Lang wee in front. This time Queen's corner floated over everyone and nestled in at the back post. So Lang went in at the interval with their noses in front.

Cambuslang should have stretched their lead on 53 minutes. Miller rounded the keeper but then appeared to lose his footing allowing the defender time to get back and make the saving tackle. Another Lang chance was passed up when Kenna's header looped inches over the bar with the keeper rooted to the spot. Maryhill suffered a blow when they were reduced to 10 men. Hobbs sent for an early bath after a clash with Lang's Ferguson. The home side made a double change and injected some fire into their side. Lang made a change of their own, but this seemed to have the opposite affect as Maryhill began to dominate possession despite having a man less.

On 67 minutes the home side drew level. Some really poor defending costing Cambuslang dearly. Lynch and Doak both had chances to clear the danger. Lynch decided to take a touch a yard from goal and he was shut down and Doak, in attempting to clear the ball, rattled it off the behind of Maryhill's Sawyers and the ball rebounded into the back of the net. Lang then made another change this time scorer Queen was replaced with Sweeney. Maryhill should have went in front on 80 minutes when Smith found himself in acres of space but he rushed the shot and pulled it wide.

Ogilvie Header In Stoppage Time,

Should Have Scored

The winner came with 9 minutes remaining. McManus corner was fumbled by Lang keeper and the ref then awarded the goal, as he was convinced it was over the line, unlike Lang keeper Connolly who was booked for protesting that it hadn't!! With 3 minutes remaining Ogilvie had a great chance to pull Lang level but his poor header flew over the bar from 6 yards. The home side could have scored in stoppage time but for a couple of good saves by Connolly.

Cambuslangs return to 1st Division was not a happy one but its a good guide to how far we have come and how much further we still have to go. Testament to the side when you come away from Maryhill gutted you didn't take at least a point says it all.
