Cambuslang Rangers 3-3 Blantyre Vics
Central Region 1st Division
Saturday 24th September
At Somervell Park
Lang and the
Vics shared 6 goals at the weekend in a game that really could have went either
way. Both teams missed plenty of chances during the 90 minutes.
Cambuslang
went with the same starting 11 that defeated Girvan last week and had new
signing Charlie Hobbs on the bench.
The game swung
from end to end at times and was pulsating at times. Both teams had chances to
win this match but some poor finishing was the downfall.
As early as
the 2nd minute Blantyre should have been in front. Mallon found himself with
plenty of time and space in the Lang box but he shot wide from 6 yards out. 2
minutes later and it was Lang’s turn to miss a sitter. Donnelly’s corner was
met by Ogilvie in the middle of the goal 3 yards out but he amazingly headed
well over the bar, a poor miss.
The visitors
made the breakthrough on 25 minutes with a simple but well taken goal. Lang hit
back within a minute. Ogilvie was bundled over in the box and the penalty
awarded. The inform Alan McCrae stepped up and slotted past the Vics keeper for
his 4th goal in as many games. Cambuslang almost went in front a minute later
but Smith headed inches over the bar, the same player was the cautioned for a
hand ball which in fairness didn’t look intentional.
A comedy of
errors led to Blantyre regaining the lead. Lang keeper Jon Connolly had a poor
clearance then the ball came back into the danger area and defender Mark Bishop
was short with a header back allowing Spencer time to nip in and he finished
the chance well. The visitors were forced into a change midway through the half
when McGuiness went off injured and he was replaced by Newmains. A minute
before the break and Vics should have stretched their lead but Mallon headed
over the bar from a good position.
H-T 1-2
Cambuslang
made a change at the start of the 2nd half, Chris Queen was introduced at the
expense of DONNELLY. Cambuslang got back level with a fine finish from Dunn,
McCrae’s free kick to back post was met on the volley by Dunn and he gave the
keeper no chance hammering into the roof of the net. The home side had a great
chance to take the lead but Matthews’s effort was deflected inches wide of the
post.
The visitors
were back in front on 58 minutes. A corner into the box was met by Vics Mallon
and he nodded past Connolly. Cambuslang then introduced new signing Charlie
Hobbs into the action, Ogilvie making way. Thomson was introduced a minute
later with Dunn the man going off. On 75 minutes Lang had a great chance but
Smith blasted his effort just over the bar. With 5 minutes left Lang drew level
for the 3rd time, this time it was another penalty Kkick when Hobbs was pushed
to the ground after the ball had been cleared up the park. The ref had no
option but to award the kick and also showed the sinner Rodgers a 2nd yellow
followed by a red card. Alan McCrae stepped up and slotted the kick past the
Vics keeper for his 2nd of the game. Cambuslang had chanced at the end to
snatch all 3 points but McCrae, Smith and Thomson all saw there efforts blocked
with some last ditch defending.
