Cambuslang Rangers 2-2 Vale of Clyde

Sectional League Cup

Wednesday 25th August 2007

at Somervell Park

Cambuslang ended their Sectional League Cup campaign with a well earned point against Super 1st side Vale of Clyde. The point sees Cambuslang finish a decent 3rd spot and a position that won’t be too disappointing for all at Somervell considering it’s a brand new team.

Cambuslang can look forward now to what will hopefully be a successful league campaign and performances similar to what was shown during the Sectional. Cambuslang more than matched each side in the section and for a bit of luck may well have taken a few more points than they ended up with. Let’s not forget each side is at least 1 league above Cambuslang and the distance travelled in such a short space of time with a brand new team has the Somervell faithful getting back some confidence lost last season.

Saturday's match gave Lang manager Alan Wardlaw one last chance to tinker and adjust formations as the section had already been one by Glencairn. Games v Vale is always tough encounters but when there is a 2 division gap between the sides you know what a difficult task laid ahead. The Tollcross side were a very good side but it’s a team Cambuslang could have beaten but a superb goal from their star turn Paul McLaughlin ensured Vale left Somervell with a point.

Cambuslang went with Barry Fraser in goal for a 2nd week and Craig Ferguson retained his starting slot after last weekend’s debut. Doak and Kavanagh were the centre partnership and Paul Brown was ruled out through injury but it’s hoped he will be ready for the league kick off this Saturday v Vale of Leven.

Danger Cleared

Vale Go Close With Header

It was a bright start to the game with Vale almost opening the scoring after 10 minutes but the width of the post kept McLaughlin's effort out. Cambuslang replied through Devine but his powerful drive was well blocked by the Vale defence. Ogilvy for Cambuslang had a chance but he pulled his effort wide of the target form an acute angle.

Hughes was getting quite a bit of joy in the middle of the park and it was him who set up Lang's first, he sent Brannigan in on goal and the Lang man slotted the ball away well. A couple of minutes later and Hughes had a great chance himself to increase Lang's lead but he volleyed well wide from 15 yards out.

H-T 1-0

Cambuslang were awakened at the start of the half when Vale equalised straight from Kick off. They took centre and with a sweeping move were level after Mackin knocked home from close range.

The visitors almost added a second, but a fine stop by Fraser in Lang's goal blocked McLaughlin's effort that went out of the post. Cambuslang got their noses back in front on 39 minutes. Ogilvy shrugged off the attentions of the Vale defence before flicking the ball over the advancing goalie and into the net. Cambuslang had keeper Fraser to thank a minute later when he pulled off another fine stop this time from Mackin's effort.

Lang Celebrate Ogilvie Goal

Lang had a chance after a fine turn and shot from Ogilvie but the keeper saved well with his feet and the danger was cleared but the defence following up. Cambuslang were left aggrieved on 57 minutes when Ogilvie found himself 1 on 1 with the keeper. The Lang man flicked the ball past the keeper but was then taken right out of the play by the Vale number 1. A penalty of the stonewall variety, well not according to the referee who waived play on, not even stopping to allow Ogilvie, spread eagled in the box, treatment. This was as poor a decision your likely to see all season. As Cambuslang asked questions about the dodgy decision the ref lost the plot a little and Lang had Doak cautioned for having the audacity to question why the ref was shouting? The ref took offence to the line of questioning and booked the Lang defender.

Lang had to replace the groggy Ogilvie who failed to run off the pole axing sustained a minute earlier. Vale got themselves level on 68 minutes after a fine strike from the impressive Paul McLaughlin. A mistake from Bishop allowed him space to run into and he fired past Fraser in Lang’s goal. A minute later and Vale should have taken the lead, but Mackin somehow blasted over from 5 yards out with the goal gapping.
