Abercorn 1st Division
Saturday 26th October
At Somervell Park
Cambuslang
scoring exploits just seem to continue and this time Vale of Clyde found
themselves on the end of a Somervell Park hammering. This was not a happy
return to an old stomping ground for ex-Lang keeper Chris Wilson who was
between the sticks for the Vale. To be fair to the big keeper his defence
helped him very little during the torrid 90 minutes.
Cambuslang
depleted squad was stretched once again when a late call off for Carmichael who
has replaced by Ferguson after picking up a strain in the warm up. Ferguson
himself had just returned from injuries and lacked match practise going into
this one. Gary McGregor returned to the starting line up as Martin was ruled
out, also missing was Coulter allowing McCarroll a rare start.
The home side
let there intentions be known early on when skipper Billy Holmes fired just
over after only 5 minutes. Vales only threat came in short bursts with Taylor
causing the Lang back line a few problems early on. The same player could have
given the visitors the lead but he pulled his effort wide of target. Cambuslang
scored 2 goals within a minute of each other to start the goal spree that was
to follow. Top scorer Paul Brown got on the end of a Billy Holmes pass and side
stepped the weak Vale challenge before firing into the roof of the net, this
was quickly followed with a second for Brown who got on the end of a Burns
cross from the left and nodded past Wilson. The visitors were not to concerned
at this stage and should have pulled a goal back minutes later. 3 attempts at
goal but they still couldn't find away through and the danger was eventually
cleared. Brown completed his hat trick on the half hour mark. McCarroll made
his way down the line before delivering a good cross and Brown took a touch
before slotting past the Vale keeper.
H-T 3-0
Vales only
threat up front failed to appear for the second half he was replaced by
Stirling. The home side stretched their lead further this time Brown turned
provider as he crossed for Ferguson who knocked the ball home from 6 yards.
Cambuslang brought on young and promising striker Richie Love to replace
McCrae. The Vale's keeper made a howler for Lang's 5th goal when he was beaten
by the bounce allowing Brown in for his 4th of the match. Sub Love grabbed the
Langs 6th goal when he knocked Galloway's cross past the once again exposed
Wilson. Cambuslang replaced the inspiring defender Martin Feenie with Derek
Watson. Then they replaced the goalkeeper giving 2nd choice Murphy a run out.
Cambuslang should have had a penalty but the referee must have been feeling
sorry for the visitors and only awarded a free kick on the edge of the box
after a foul on Love. Cambuslang scored their 7th after a driven cross by
Holmes was knocked home by Love who went on to grab his hat trick on 80
minutes. He cut inside the defender before firing low past Wilson to round off
a thoroughly miserable return to Somervell for the Vale keeper.
