Lanark United 4-2 Cambuslang Rangers
Central Region 1st
Division
Saturday 26th August
2006
Cambuslang Rangers suffered another heavy defeat at the weekend,
this time at the hands of Lanark United. Despite a dream start, scoring after only
a minute Cambuslang suffered a mini collapse in the second half as Lanark ran
out comfortable winners.
Cambuslang afternoon got worse when they had 2 players red carded during the game
The local side made a couple of changes to the side that was well
beaten by Port Glasgow last week, out went striker Chris Faulds and he was
replaced by Derek Anderson, making a surprise return to Somervell. There was
yet another trialist in goals as Cambuslang hunt for the solution that would
prevent the leak of Goals at an alarming rate. Kerr Gray also returned to the
starting line up.
It was a dream start for the visitors as they opened the scoring
with the first attack of the match. A mix up between Lanark defender and keeper
allowed Patrick time to nip in and on the turn his shot found the corner of the
net.
Cambuslang's celebrations were short lived though as the home side
hit back 4 minutes later. Burns deep cross was met by Lanark’s Smith and
he hit home from close range. A minute later and the same two players combined
yet again only this time Smiths header went inches over the bar. The first
booking of the game came after 23 minutes when Langs McGowan was yellow carded
for a foul on Smith.

On the half hour mark Cambuslang took a surprise lead. Doyle's free kick flicked off the head of Lanark's Keegans and came to Martin unmarked at the back post. The Lang defender then headed back across the keeper and into the far corner of the net. Cambuslang picked up another silly booking when Anderson was yellow carded for foul and abusive language at the ref.
Cambuslang made, what can only be described as a tactical swish
when they replaced Robertson with McCracken on 35 minutes.
Cambuslang keeper Trialist made a finer save from the foot of
Struthers to keep Langs noses in front. Cambuslang picked up another booking
but this time was a clear case of mistaken identity. Patrick committed a foul
on the halfway line but the ref allowed advantage. When play stopped he called
over O'Neil and booked him, but despite appeals the ref was having none of it,
this booking would cost O'Neil later in the game.

The home side came out for the second half fired up and went close
on 47 minutes. Smith forced the Lang keeper into another fine stop. Lanark
should have been level on 53 minutes but for a fine saving tackle from
McCracken who threw himself in front of Middleton’s shot and deflected it over
the bar.
Lanark's pressure eventually paid off on 64 minutes. Davies only
on the park a matter of minutes took the ball round the Lang keeper and hit
goal wards, Doyle got a touch but it wasn't enough to put it round the post as
it just sneaked in and no more.
3 minutes later and Cambuslang fell behind. a superb free kick
from ex-Lang player Paul Burns flew into the top corner with the keeper a mere
spectator.
Cambuslang replaced Kerr Gray with Chris Faulds in an attempt to
get back into the game.
Cambuslang had there keeper to thank minutes later after a fine
double save kept out Davies and Smith in quick succession.
The match was all but over for Lang as they conceded another on 75
minutes. The home side broke up field and a fine block by Martin but the ball
fell to Davies who made no mistake in hammering the ball home. A minute later
and Lang were down to ten men, Captain O'Neil was cautioned for the second time
and sent for an early bath. Anderson quickly followed him for punching the ball
away. Lang seemed to be loosing the plot as well as the game and Lanark
threatened to score more heavily.
Lang were dealt another blow late on when Patrick went down injured and he had to be helped from the field and replaced with Wyatt.
