Cambuslang Rangers 1-2 Cumbernauld Utd.

Central League 1st Division

Saturday 27th January

at Somervell Park

Cambuslang Rangers played their first game of the new year after the weather put played to previous arranged matches. Cumbernauld United were the visitors to Somervell. Cambuslang had played Cumbernauld earlier in the season in the Sectional League Cup and new what type of game to expect, Cambuslang winning that game by 2 goals to nil. The visitors came into the game sitting pretty at the top of the division although they had played a few more games than their opponents.

Cambuslang went into the game minus top Scorer and captain Billy Holmes who was ruled out with a neck injury. Also missing was winger Stewart Maxwell who received a hefty 6 game ban for his sending off in the Scottish Cup tie with Glencairn. Recent signing Ryan Lever is making steady progress in his recovery from a broken arm picked up also in the game v Glencairn 90 seconds into his home debut.

Cambuslang started brightly enough and will feel a little aggrieved at not taken at least a share of the spoils. A controversial offside went against the home team with 4 minutes remaining allowing the visitors to snatch all 3 points, this was despite Cambuslang going in at half time a goal to the good after Kenny Balmain had put them in front, but 2 late strikes by the visitors ensured they remained top of the Division.

Both teams were closing each other down quickly and no real efforts at goal for the first 20 minutes, the first real effort should have resulted in the visitors taking the lead, but Paisley somehow missed an open goal from 6 yards, he headed wide with the goal at his mercy. The home sides first shot at goal came from he foot of Devanney, he was set up by Richardson but his effort flew over the bar. Next up Daisley went close with his header from Devanney's cross. Daisley then tested the Cumbernauld keeper after some nice close control and then a shot which was well saved by Wilson in the Cumbernauld goal. The visitors were forced into a change on the half hour mark when Glancey pulled up injured, he was replaced by McAvoy. Cumbernauld then had strong appeals for a penalty when Paisley seemed to have been pushed in the box but the referee waved play on. Cambuslang opened the scoring after 35 minutes. Daisley out wide worked his way to the edge of the box before firing in a driven cross which Balmain did well to direct into the net. Cumbernauld should have been on level terms only a minute later. A harmful cross into the box was fumbled by the usually reliable Wardlaw and it fell to the feet of Paisley who once again failed to capitalise on the home sides errors allowing the home side to go in at the interval 1 up.

H-T 1-0

Cumbernauld found themselves on level terms when once again Wardlaw in goal failed to grab hold of a cross into the box this time they were punished when the ball fell at the feet of defender Gordon who made no mistake from 6 yards. In the space of a couple of minutes Cambuslang had 2 players booked and both for dissent, first into the book went Gary Robertson for complaining about a foul on him and then he was followed by Mark Dunn. Robertson's was too prove the costliest later on. Cumbernauld almost took the lead when Morrison fired in a blistering shot that went just wide. The same player then had an effort cleared off the line. Cambuslang then replaced Devanney with Earlie looking. The visitors grabbed the winner in controversial circumstances, McPhee looked at least 5 yards off side but the referee allowed play to on which left Wardlaw completely exposed and he could do nothing as McPhee rounded him and tapped into the empty net to clinch the 3 points for the visitors. The game ended in a sour note when Robertson collected his second booking meaning he had to go after a blatant body check on Cumbernauld's Gordon. This could prove costly and mean another suspension for the full back.
