Cambuslang Rangers 0-1 Tayport
O.V.D.
Scottish Junior Cup
Saturday 27th
March
at Somervell
Park
Cambuslang Rangers cup dream came to an end at
the weekend when they lost out to favourites and holders Tayport. A single goal
scored after 15 minutes was enough to see the visitors through in front of a
1600 plus crowd.
Cambuslang were unable to provide the vast home
support with the performance that was needed to see off a very well organised
and experienced side. They will just have to regroup and get their minds on
winning promotion into the Super League.
It would take a hard man to criticise
Cambuslang after the below par performance, but they have come so far this
season, I won't be the one to do it...
Gary McGregor came back into the starting line
up after returning from holiday.
Cambuslang Rangers found themselves under some early pressure but weathered the storm and indeed it was the home side that had the best early chance, skipper Billy Holmes forced Tayport keeper Fitzpatrick into a fine stop but the goalie couldn't hold the shot and Paul Brown following up rattled the rebound off the base of the post. This was to be as close the Lang got to a goal in the first half as Tayport dominated at the back and in the middle of the park. Tayport responded with a fine shot of their own that Rowan saved well. Lang's Carmichael picked up an early booking after 2 fouls in quick succession and would now walk a tightrope for the rest of the match. Tayport scored what turned out to be the winning goal after 15 minutes with their first shot at goal. The Lang defence failed to deal with Christie's cross and the ball came to McNaughton on the edge of the box and his drive beat Rowan. The visitors were quite happy now to sit back and play the game in their own half and try and hit Cambuslang on the break. The visitors were forced into an early change when Christie failed to recover from an earlier knock and he was replaced with Hunter.

The second half saw Cambuslang have there best
spell in the game and they began to play the way the fans knew they were
capable of, but failed to find away past the experienced Port defence.
Fitzpatrick had to be alert as he pulled off a fine save from Burns. The home
side replaced Gary McGregor with Jamie McCarroll on 53 minutes. The minutes
later Willie Galloway went close from the edge of the box, his shot going
narrowly wide of the upright. The home side had big appeals for a spot kick
waived away by the referee after it looked like Brown was upended by the Port
keeper. On 76 minutes McCrae came on in place of Coulter. With 8 minutes
remaining Lang Keeper kept his side in this tie with a fine stop from
Patterson. Cambuslang then replaced Burns with Ferguson on 84 minutes in an
attempt to get level. Cambuslang task was made all the more harder when
defender Martin Feenie was sent off after two quick bookings, the first yellow
came after a tangle with Port Paterson and as he rejoined the play the linesman
spotted something which the referee adjudged serious enough to send the Lang
man off. Tayport were sitting in at this stage quite content to hit the Lang on
the break as the pressed for the equaliser that would have taken the game to a
replay but it wasn't to be and Rowan was called into action at the end with yet
another fine stop this time from Stewart. Lang skipper Billy Holmes almost
levelled in stoppage time but his effort went agonisingly wide of the post.
