Cambuslang Rangers 4-4 Thorniewood

Central Region 2nd Division

Saturday 27th October 2007

At Somervell Park

Cambuslang Rangers threw away a 3 goal lead and a chance of moving into the top half of the league after a thrilling 4-4 draw with Thorniewood. Even a Kevin Ogilvey hat trick after 13 minutes wasn't enough to secure all 3 points. An injury time equaliser for the visitors saw them snatch a point at the death.

Cambuslang were to be left cursing the ref who had a very inadequate game but at the end of the day, he wasn't the one that put the ball in Lang's net 4 times in what was a pretty poor defensive performance. All the visitors’ goals came from set pieces and Cambuslang must learn to defend these better. Lang cruised into a 3 goal lead after only 13 minutes but then seemed to think, Game Over and switched off as Thorniewood came storming back to level before the break.

Cambuslang were unable to field the same side that had thumped EK the previous week as Garry Lynch failed a late fitness test, Bishop taking his place in the starting line up. Jim Kavanagh returned but had to make do with a place on the bench.

Barton Getting Stuck In

Cambuslang had a chance after only 2 minutes but Ogilvey saw his effort deflected inches wide, but the Lang fans didn't have long to wait. 5 minutes later and Oglivey grabbed his first. Quick thinking from Lang keeper seen him take the route one option and Ogilvey latched onto his long ball through the middle and he took a touch before despatching past the keeper. The strikers second was far behind and on 10 minutes he charged down the defenders clearance and ran on and shot home under the keeper. On 13 minutes he completed his sensational hard trick. Again he found himself 1 on 1 with the keeper and the result was just as impressive slipping the ball under the keeper’s body.

Well what happened after that is anyone's? Cambuslang just seemed to switch off, go to sleep or think the game was won? Far from it and Thorniewood had other ideas. On 22 minutes they game themselves a little hope. Despite a superb save from Smith the ball fell kindly for Graham and he passed across the face of goal where Fallon was waiting to tap home. On the half hour mark Thorniewood grabbed a second from a position that looked well offside but the ref waived play on. Another cross wasn't cut out by the Lang defence and Fallon’s diving header found the bottom corner. The come back was complete 5 minutes later and yet again it was poor defending at set pieces. Dunn was allowed to run at the Land back line before sending the ball into the box where it was met by Devlin and his effort nestled in the back of the net. Cambuslang did have another chance to re-take the lead but Ferguson fired straight at the keeper.

The Game Threatened To Boil Over

H-T 3-3

Cambuslang started the second brightly enough and Ogilvey had a chance in the opening minute but the Lang man fired over the bar.

There was a scare and a let off for the home side when Logan saw a header come back off the bar with keeper Smith rooted to the spot, the danger was cleared by Doak.

The visitors went close again on the hour mark but Smith blocked with his feet.

It was almost an hour before the inconsistent official flashed a card and it was yellow in the direction of Lang's Paul Hughes for a late challenge.

Cambuslang regained the lead and deservedly so.

Ogilvey and Cameron combined well to set up the later who fired home from 18 yards. Thorniewood looked to have levelled again but it was well offside.

Cameron Restored Lang’s Lead

Cambuslang grabbed a 5th to put the game to bed but to the astonishment of everyone, including Thorniewood players, he ruled it offside despite the shot going past to Wood defenders standing on the line. Another poor decision that went against Cambuslang.

As time was ticking bye there was another twist in this sensational match and it wasn't to Lang’s pleasure. 1 minute into stoppage time and the visitors grabbed another equaliser. Another hopeful cross wasn't dealt with and Graham headed back across Smith into the far corner.

So the game ended in the 4-4 draw and a dropped 2 points for the home side. Not ideal preparation for this weekends trip North but no need for any panic buttons to be pressed either.
