Neilston Juniors 2-1 Cambuslang Rangers

Cambuslang Rangers came as close as they have all season of recording their first league win in almost a year. Saturday's narrow 2-1 defeat at the hands of Neilston was a hard one to take after the Lang had taken a 1-0 lead in at the interval. A red card for Langs midfield dynamo cost the Lang in this fixture, even although Neilston had most of the pressure in the second half, they never really troubled Cambuslang until Gemmell received his marching orders. The red card was a bit harsh too as the player was wrongly booked in the first half when he was the one fouled.

It was pleasing to see that Cambuslang had taken the decent performance v Largs the previous week and built on it as the side seemed to have some belief and a bit of confidence now which is vital at this level.

Cambuslang fielded their two most recent acquisitions that played v Largs, Irons in midfield and Anderson up front. Both players impressed in the debut and followed that up with another competent performance v  Neilston.

There was only 2 changes to the starting line up. Steven O'Neil was unavailable and his slot was taken by Kerr Gray and Stewart Taylor failed to shake off the ankle injury picked up v Largs and his replacement in that game, Ian McAdam started v Neilston.

It was a disastrous start for the visitors as Neilston were awarded a very soft penalty kick inside the opening 5 minutes. Kerr Gary was adjudged to have fouled Cochrane in the box and the ref pointed to the spot much to the amazement of the Lang defender. Cochrane stepped up and committed the ultimate sin, by putting his kick wide of the target and not even making McGovern make the save. A huge let off for the Lang and one they would head for the rest of the game. Cambuslang had a half chance on 12 minutes but Anderson's effort was easily saved.

Mates After Putting Cambuslang Into The Lead

Cochrane had another chance for Neilston after yet another poor punch from keeper McGovern presented the player with the ball but he put the ball wide with the goal gapping. Lang captain Andy Noble, with another solid performance, picked up a booking after a late challenge. But again it looked like the ball was won but the ref thought otherwise, as he would most of the game. On the stroke of halftime Cambuslang took the lead. McKinnon broke down the right hand side before sending the ball over and the on rushing Chris Faulds made no mistake and rattled the ball home. This sparked mass hysteria amongst the players and supporters, not something we are used to.

H-T 0-1

The second half was a bit of a battle for Cambuslang as they found themselves getting pressed further and further back, but credit to the back line and keeper as they seemed very capable and dealt with everything that Neilston had to offer. McGovern was forced to turn Cochran's effort round the post although the Lang keeper maybe should have held the effort. On 50 minutes it looked like the Lang back line was about to be breached but McGovern's last ditch intervention blocked Neilstons effort and it was cleared by Noble.

Cambuslang's Gemmell picked up a booking on the hour mark, but it was him who clearly won the ball and the Neilston player followed through on the Lang man. That caution proved costly only minutes later as he was booked for a late challenge as this was his second the ref had no option but to send the Lang man off. A costly mistake by the ref in booking him earlier. The red card turned the game on it's head as Neilston made the 1 man advantage count. They had rarely threatened up till that point. With Gemmell off even the reorganisation by the management could not compensate for Gemmells loss. Neilston took full advantage and were level minutes later. Cochran was given far too much time in the Lang box and he turned and fired past McGovern. It was backs to the wall now for Lang as they tried to hang on for the point. Neilston took the lead after 78 minutes. Although both Neilston players looked at least a yard offside, the linesman's flag stayed down and Cochran was on hand to nod home the winner. Neilston had another few chances near the end but Cambuslang managed to keep them at bay.

A sign today that maybe Cambuslang are beginning to put something together here, but these signs have been seen before and a bit on consistency is needed now. both new signings impressed yet again and Cambuslang are looking like a team more and more each passing week. With 2 home games coming up there will be no better opportunity for Cambuslang to notch that elusive first league win an almost a year. First up are Beith this weekend and that is followed by Lugar Boswell Thistle.
