Cambuslang Rangers 3-2 Vale of Leven

Central Region 1st Division

Saturday 28th April

At Somervell Park

Cambuslang Rangers went into this game knowing nothing short of 3 points was needed if they have any chance of avoiding the drop. Thankfully for Lang manager his troops delivered but it took a last minute winner from Zander McMullan to do it.

Hero McMullan only got into the side due to the injury McLaughlin picked up in the defeat against Cumbernauld 2 days earlier. But he responded by sending a wee message to the gaffer by scoring 2 of the goals in the 5 goal thriller.

They match started pretty slowly with neither team making any inroads and it was 16 minutes before anything of note happened. Cambuslang almost took the lead through Taylor, but his effort was well saved by the feet of Halpin. On 32 minutes a fine shot by Ogilvy was spilled by the vale keeper but no one from Cambuslang was following up and the keeper gathered at the second attempt. A couple of minutes later and Cambuslang went close again, this time Brown's free kick going inches wide of the post. The visitors were forced into a change on 36 minutes. Brown making way for Filshie. The first caution of the game came on 42 minutes when McGowan was cautioned for a trip on the edge of the box. 2 minutes later and Cambuslang were awarded a penalty. Taylor going down after being hit from behind by King.

Lang's regular spot kick taker Paul Hughes was suspended so the task was left Kevin Coyle and the midfielder made no mistake as he sent the keeper the wrong way to give the Lang a 1-0 interval lead.

3 minutes into the second half and Vale were level. In somewhat fortuitous circumstances at that. What appeared to be a harmless cross come shot found itself nestling in the far corner with the Lang keeper helpless to stop it. On 57 minutes Carson was replaced Hannan.

On 65 minutes Cambuslang regained the lead. A quite spectacular strike from Zander McMullan saw the ball fly past the Vale keeper from 20 yards. Cambuslang were still celebrating the goal when Vale were level once again. They took centre ran up the park and this time a cross come shot ended up looping over Fraser and into the back of the net.

Cambuslang went close on 70 minutes after a fine shot on the turn by Brown but his effort glanced off the face of the bar. 10 minutes later he received a booking for not retreating at a free kick, the Lang player was at least 12 yards from the ball but the constant whinging from the Vale keeper resulted in a yellow card for Brown. Next up McMullen was cautioned as frustrations were beginning to show as Vale wasted every bit of time they could get away with. With time running out and the game looking like it was going to end in stalemate up stepped Zander McMullan to become Cambuslang's hero. He was on hand to head home the last minute winner from 6 yards out and spark mass celebrations, both on the park and off. Zander was replaced a minute later with Wyatt.

This result gives Cambuslang a chance to remain in the division but it is out of there hands but itís a chance they didn't look like having until hero McMullan nodded home the winner.
