Cambuslang Rangers kicked off their Super League Season with a
dull 0-0 draw with Cumbernauld at the weekend, not the start the fans had hoped
for. We have all heard of the exciting nil nil draws, well this wasn't one of
them by far.
The home side still struggle on with half a team missing. Craig
Rowan, Alan McCrae, Gary McGregor, Richie Love well all missing due to holidays
and Willie Galloway was suspended due to the red card earned v Blantyre in the
Sectional League Cup.
It was match where there was very little goal mouth action
form either side as both keepers had a quiet afternoon at the office. It was
all of fifteen minutes before any action took place at all and it was the
visitors doing the threatening. A good move from back to front seen Cumbernauld
carve open a chance but Trialist shot inches wide from the edge of the box. The
first booking of the game went to Cumbernauld's Miller for a poor challenge on
Feenie. On the half hour mark and the visitors missed a golden opportunity to
open the scoring. A corner kick from the left was met, unchallenged, by
Stirling but he headed inches wide of the upright. The home side's only chance
of the half came on 35 minutes when trialist Kenny Balmain saw his header
spectacularly saved by the Cumbernauld keeper, one for the cameras.
H-T 0-0
Cambuslang showed a bit more in the second half and created a
couple of half chances for themselves. Carr saw his free kick well saved again
by the keeper. Cumbernauld went close through Brown but his effort was
deflected wide of the target. Cambuslang had to thank Jamie McCarroll
for keeping them level after he cleared a Fitzpatrick effort off the line. The
visitors were having most of the play by this point and Cambuslang were being
pushed deeper and deeper, struggling at times just to get out of their own
half. McCarroll was involved at the right end this time his free kick
was well saved by Cumbernauld's keeper. Cambuslang had strong appeals for
a penalty waived away when Paterson was clearly pushed over in the box, but the
referee was unimpressed and waived the Lang man to his feet. Cumbernauld should
have grabbed a goal with 5 minutes to go, substitute McAvoy forced Lowe into a
fine stop but the ball fell kindly for the follow up by the Trialist but he
blasted the ball over the bar for about 3 yards. .
