Cambuslang Rangers slumped to another late defeat this time a 3rd
minute injury time winner by Lugar sees Cambuslang lurking at the foot of the
table. Lugar are directly above Cambuslang so this match was literally a 6
pointer that the home side won and probably on the balance of things, deserved
to do so. But it was the way it was won was the most disappointing aspect for
Cambuslang travelling support.
This is the 2nd week in a row where Cambuslang have lost a winning
goal in stoppage time.
Cambuslang were unable to field the same team that had performed
reasonably well v Kilwinning after Stewart Taylor was injured in training. Paul
Burns slotted into the gap left by Taylor but didn't last long as he had to be
replaced only 15 minutes into the game.
This was very much an end to end game but Lugar looked the better
side after early exchanges and indeed seemed to have the ball a lot more than
the visitors which was a worrying thing..
The first notable action was that Burns substitution. He found
himself on the end of a pretty poor challenge and had to be helped from the
field. With Burns still off the field getting treatment the home side opened
the scoring when a cross into the box was not dealt with by the Lang defence
and Walker was on hand to knock home. Cambuslang were then able to bring on
Burns replacement, Ian Stoddart.
On 20 minutes Cambuslang went close when Timmons saw his effort
deflected inches wide of the goal and soon after Menelaws had a header the
sailed narrowly over the bar. The visitors picked up a couple of bookings when
Gray and Faulds received yellow cards.
Lang trialist keeper Colquhoun had some impressive saves
during the game. On 30 minutes Cambuslang managed to draw level. A Jimmy
Coulter drive was turned round the post and from the resulting Menelaws corner,
Timmons got up well to head home.
On 43 minutes Cambuslang fell behind again. After losing
possession in the middle of the park, Scott was allowed space to run in and
slot it past the exposed Colquhoun. it could have been worse for Cambuslang had
Walkers drive found the net and not rattled the bar in the last bit of action
in the first half
H-T 2-1
A bizarre start to the 2nd half saw Cambuslang players, supporters
and management stand by and watch in amazement at the following event. A break
by Menelaws saw him have a clear run in on goal after beating the offside but
the linesman flag went up, but Cambuslang fans were in a rage as the y thought
it was to flag Menelaws offside. It was not, the linesman raised his flag to
catch the referee's attention as the linesman on the other half of the pitch
was standing with his flag raised for an earlier Lugar offside. Cambuslang were
then awarded a free kick deep in their own half. What ever happened to the
advantage rule? That's was the question on all Langs fans lips..
Cambuslang almost levelled for a 2nd time when Faulds saw his
effort parried but it was cleared just before it crossed the Lugar line..
Cambuslang replaced McGowan with Gallagher on 65 minutes.
On 70 minutes Cambuslang found themselves up against it after
Timmons was red carded for a poor challenge, a yellow card offence maybe but
the ref seen it differently and sent the Lang man off ruling him out of this
weekends O.V.D Cup tie v Arthurlie
5 minutes later and it looked all over for the Somervell
park boys as Lugar grabbed the third. A poor clearance by Stoddart saw Walker
pick up the ball and curl his effort past Colquhoun. Cambuslang brought on Wade
for Church on 78 minutes.
2 minutes later and Cambuslang pulled a goal back to set up a
nervy finish. Faulds made and scored this one after he skipped past 2 Lugar
defenders and then slipped the ball past the advancing keeper. Another couple
off stupid bookings soon followed when both Lang's Menelaws and Porter were
yellow carded for dissent. With the clock saying 90 minutes Cambuslang looked
to have snatched a point after looking out of it, Porter converting a penalty
after a Lugar hand ball in the box. But football has a nasty habit of kicking you
when your down and this kick must have hurt. Cambuslang Rangers were reduced to 9 men on 92 minutes when Faulds
picked up his second yellow card of the game for kicking the ball away... With 3
minutes injury time already played, Lugar grabbed the winner. A Speculative
effort by Lugar was blocked and the ball rebounded to Walker who slotted past
Colquhoun. Another cruel blow for the Lang.
Line up was
Colquhoun, Church (Wade 78), McGowan (Gallagher 65), Noble, Gray, Coulter,
Burns (Stoddart 15), Timmons, Porter, Menelaws, Faulds.
