Cambuslang Rangers 2-3 Benburb

Central Region 1st Division

Saturday 30th August 2008

at Somervell Park

Cambuslang Rangers blew the chance to get some league points on the board when they twice threw away a lead and finally were undone with a late winner from Benburb writes Jim Logan.

In the 3-2 loss Cambuslang had twice taken the lead only to concede right after. And the disaster was complete when the visitors grabbed the winner with only 3 minutes to go.

Cambuslang brought back Andy Kenna into midfield and there was also a start for Marshall after his goal v Glens midweek. Hughes and Lynch were both dropped as was Miller, Boyce partnered Ogilvie in attack.

Chance At Back Post Goes A Begging

Queen In The Thick Of It

It was a pretty even opening and both sides were creating, but not taking, chances. On 16 minutes the first real move of the game produced a goal. Boyce skinned the Bens defender and fired in an excellent shot that was well saved but Irvine followed up to rifle home from close range. Cambuslang's celebrations were short lived however. The visitors were level within a minute. They took centre and raced up field and in a similar move that gave the Lang the lead they were back level. From the kick off Lang defence were still sleeping and although Connolly produced a fine stop but Gibson was on hand to tap home the equaliser.

On 20 minutes Lang were dealt a blow when Boyce had to go off injured and he was replaced with Trialist. Ogilvie had a couple of chances to put Lang back in front, he shot just wide on 32 minutes and then he fired inches over the bar from a good position. he didn't have to wait too long for his next effort as he was pulled down ion the box and a penalty kick awarded. The bens defender only yellow carded when he really should have walked for the last man tackle. Ogilvie dusted himself down and slotted the kick past Bens keeper. But as like the Lang first goal, celebrations were short lived as Bens scored within a minute for a second time. Poor defending as Lang backed off and Sweeney scored past Connolly.

H-T 2-2

The 2nd half started with Benburb Gibson being cautioned for a silly dive in the box right in front of the referee. Lang should have had another penalty when Queen was clearly fouled but the ref was having none of it.

On the hour mark Cambuslang had another great chance but yet again it wasn't converted, this time Ogilvie hit the side net with his shot. Cambuslang brought on Hughes in place of Marshall and within a minute he was booked.

Cambuslang also introduced Miller into the action, at the expense of Irvine. Benburb grabbed the winner with 3 minutes left.

A defensive blunder gifted Bens the winner, despite a decent save by Connolly McMillan was on hand to tap the ball home from 6 yards and leave Lang still pointless in the League, albeit its only 2 games.
